AMORPHIS is riding high on the success of their fifteenth studio album, Borderland, which dropped in September 2025 via Reigning Phoenix Music. This latest release marks a critical juncture in their illustrious 35-year journey, seamlessly blending melodic intricacies with dynamic storytelling, thanks to the fresh insight of producer Jacob Hansen.

Critics have lauded Borderland for its rich textures and melodic depth, highlighting how the band has managed to maintain their atmospheric prowess while injecting a renewed clarity into their songwriting. Recorded in late 2024 to early 2025 at Hansen Studios in Ribe, Denmark, the album’s cover art was crafted by the talented Dutch artist Marald Van Haasteren, known for collaborations with giants like METALLICA and BLACK SABBATH.

Since their formation in Helsinki back in 1990, AMORPHIS has boldly navigated through various musical realms, evolving from raw death metal roots to crafting melodic, progressive, and folk-infused heavy rock. Each era of their career has seen them push the boundaries of musical and lyrical expression without losing sight of their core identity.

With Borderland, AMORPHIS not only continues their legacy but redefines it. The album reflects their collective creative resurgence, and as guitarist Esa Holopainen puts it, “There was no grand master plan... the end result is dynamic and diverse.” Keyboardist Santeri Kallio adds that the new material feels “more organic and straightforward” compared to their previous work.

Drummer Jan Rechberger emphasizes the album's accessibility, noting its modern feel while staying true to their roots. Vocalist Tomi Joutsen describes his performance on this record as a career-defining moment, particularly highlighting the title track as a quintessential AMORPHIS piece with its signature sound.

With an unwavering commitment to their art and a fearless embrace of the future, AMORPHIS remains a formidable force in the heavy metal scene. As Koivusaari concludes, “Borderland might be the most AMORPHIS-sounding album we've ever made. After such a long and successful career, that feels pretty damn great!”
