MIKE PORTNOY Says Comparisons To MIKE MANGINI 'Aren't Fair': 'Technically, He Does Things That I Can't Do'

Mike Portnoy says comparisons to Mike Mangini aren't fair due to their distinct drumming approaches.

In a recent interview, Mike Portnoy discussed the period when Mike Mangini was Dream Theater's drummer, spanning 13 years when Portnoy was not part of the band. Portnoy shared that he followed the band's releases during that time out of curiosity but only recently dove into the Mangini-era material deeply after rejoining the band in 2023.

Portnoy described the experience of seeing Dream Theater without him as emotionally challenging, comparing it to going through a divorce. However, now back with the band, he has developed a different appreciation for the songs and respects the work performed during Mangini's tenure.

Regarding comparisons between himself and Mangini, Portnoy emphasized that their playing styles differ greatly. He characterized Mangini as very methodical and technical, whereas he himself is more spontaneous and loose in his drumming. Although Mangini performs techniques Portnoy finds difficult, Portnoy expressed comfort with his own style and contributions beyond just drumming.

Portnoy also highlighted his inclusive approach to setlists, ensuring that material from the Mangini era remains part of Dream Theater’s live performances. He mentioned that fans enjoy that era and sees value in honoring that legacy. The band recently performed their first concert with Portnoy back after 14 years, emphasizing a renewed chapter in Dream Theater's history.

Dream Theater’s latest album, "Parasomnia," was released in February 2025 and features a lengthy progressive metal set. The record was produced by guitarist John Petrucci and continues the band’s history of complex compositions, with many tracks exceeding seven minutes in length.
