Biff Byford Talks Saxon's Resilience and Upcoming Album 'Gods Of Thunder'

SAXON's legendary frontman reflects on nearly 50 years of metal mayhem and the passionate journey ahead.

In a recent interview at Poland's Mystic Festival, SAXON's iconic frontman Biff Byford opened up about the relentless passion that fuels his near 50-year career in heavy metal. With a steely resolve, he stated, "Well, we love what we do, for starters. We love writing songs and strive to create great music that resonates with both our loyal fans and a new generation. It's been a rollercoaster ride through the ups and downs, and our motto? Never surrender, baby! That’s the spirit of rock and roll!"

Byford then delved into what makes being part of SAXON so exhilarating. He noted the rare privilege of standing shoulder to shoulder with the legends of the genre like IRON MAIDEN and JUDAS PRIEST, bands that have carved their place in history since the '70s and '80s. "We’ve crafted anthems that echoed around the globe and shifted perspectives on music. It's a legacy that still resonates, especially with the youth of today. Social media has bridged the gap, making it easier than ever for fans to connect with us and keep our music alive in their hearts," he added.

When asked whether heavy metal is thriving more now than it did at SAXON’s inception, Byford reflected, "In 1980, we had vinyl records and magazines. The essence was the same—rock fans united by their love of heavy tunes—just the medium has shifted. I look into the crowd and see the same fierce passion that existed back then. Sure, it might feel darker today, but fans are more informed and engaged than ever. It's a community, a family, and we're honored to still be a part of it."

The heavy metal juggernaut is gearing up for the release of their new studio album, 'Gods Of Thunder', slated for January 2027, which will follow the critically acclaimed 'Hell, Fire And Damnation' that dropped in January 2024. With longtime producer and JUDAS PRIEST touring guitarist Andy Sneap at the helm, Byford confirmed the mixing of the new album is complete and set to unleash a fresh wave of thunderous riffs.

Amidst the music, Byford’s personal battles have also been a part of the narrative. After bravely confronting bowel cancer—an ordeal that saw him undergo chemotherapy and surgeries—he emerged resilient, ready to forge ahead. Despite health challenges, including a heart procedure and the heart attack that led to triple bypass surgery in 2019, Byford stands as a testament to the undying spirit of metal.

With the departure of original guitarist Paul Quinn and the introduction of DIAMOND HEAD's Brian Tatler on the road, SAXON continues to evolve while holding tight to their roots. With Biff and Quinn as the last of the original lineup, they remain a fierce symbol of metal's enduring legacy. From South Yorkshire to the world stage, SAXON is not just a band; they are the embodiment of heavy metal's heartbeat.
