Randy Blythe Talks Vocal Discipline and Logo Controversy in New Interview
In a raw and revealing chat on Australia's Rebel FM with Brooksy & JD, LAMB OF GOD's frontman Randy Blythe laid bare his vocal regimen while on tour. He emphasized the importance of sleep in maintaining his powerful voice, stating, "I do really try and pay attention to my sleep on tour more. I've been sober for 15 years. Back in the day, sleep was optional; beer was essential." With a chuckle, he acknowledged the temptation of Australia’s pub scene, but firmly reiterated that without proper rest, his vocals would suffer. "If you don't sleep, it doesn't matter. You're gonna lose it," he asserted, illustrating the discipline it takes to command the stage night after night.
Blythe also took a moment to address the seismic shift in LAMB OF GOD's visual identity, as the band unveiled a new logo for the first time in 27 years on their latest record, "Into Oblivion." With a hint of sarcasm, he recalled his previous comments likening the old logo to a "falafel restaurant menu," and how he was the last to know about the redesign. "It's just a name. And it's just the way you put up the name, I guess. I don’t care. You can put it in fancy cursive or 14-year-old schoolgirl bubble letters. It doesn’t make a difference as to what I’m gonna do when I get on the microphone," Blythe quipped, showcasing his focus on the music rather than the aesthetics.
Meanwhile, guitarist Mark Morton weighed in on the logo controversy during a recent interview, noting, "Such a controversy around the logo… I love it." He clarified that the old logo isn't erased from existence; it's still emblazoned on every fan's t-shirt. Morton explained that the new logo reflects the fresh energy of their latest album, saying, "It just felt a little dated, you know what I mean?" The shift was meant to symbolize a new era for the band, even if some fans felt the minimalist design lacked punch.
As for the backlash, Morton shrugged off the negativity, stating, "If the worst thing they have to say about the record is that they don’t like the logo, then we're in great shape." This confidence stems from a solid musical foundation, as the new album "Into Oblivion" has been well-received, showcasing the band’s evolution while still honoring their roots. Recorded in iconic locales tied to the band’s history, including the legendary Total Access studio where Blythe laid down his vocals, the album stands as a testament to LAMB OF GOD's relentless pursuit of excellence.
With a legacy solidified by their recent 25th anniversary celebrations and a killer rendition of BLACK SABBATH's "Children Of The Grave," LAMB OF GOD continues to push boundaries and challenge expectations. As they gear up for an electrifying performance season, fans can look forward to a band that’s as fierce in their image as they are in their sound.
