Draconian Returns: Swedish Gothic Doom Icons Announce Eighth Album 'In Somnolent Ruin'
Swedish gothic doom pioneers Draconian have officially announced their long-awaited eighth studio album, In Somnolent Ruin, scheduled for release on May 8, 2026, via Napalm Records.
The announcement marks the end of a six-year wait following their critically acclaimed 2020 release, Under a Godless Veil. The new record is described as one of the most personal and atmospheric in the band’s storied career, weaving a dreamlike journey across nine new tracks.
The Return of a Legend
One of the most significant highlights of the new album is the official studio return of vocalist Lisa Johansson. Having fronted the band for their first five albums before departing in 2011, Johansson rejoined the group for live performances in 2022. In Somnolent Ruin marks her first full studio collaboration with harsh vocalist and founding member Anders Jacobsson in over a decade, promising a return to the dual-vocal dynamic that defined the band's early success.
A Soulful Evolution
Written, recorded, and arranged by guitarist Johan Ericson, the album explores deep philosophical themes, specifically Plato’s theory of the soul. Ericson noted that the record's origins date back to 2021, beginning with the track "Misanthrope River," a song whose title had existed since the Under a Godless Veil sessions but only recently found its musical identity.
"Early on, I had a clear sense of the overall vibe I wanted for the album: classic doom intertwined with ambient soundscapes," Ericson shared. The result is an hour-long odyssey that leans into dark folk and eerie ambient influences while maintaining the band's "classical sludge" and gothic roots.
A Revitalized Lineup
The album features the band's updated lineup, which has been honing its chemistry on the road since 2022:
Anders Jacobsson – Vocals
Lisa Johansson – Vocals
Johan Ericson – Guitars
Niklas Nord – Guitars (joined in 2022)
Daniel Arvidsson – Bass (switched from guitar in 2022)
Daniel Johansson – Drums (joined as a full member in 2025)
In Somnolent Ruin Track Listing:
I Welcome Thy Arrow
The Monochrome Blade
Anima (feat. Daniel Änghede)
The Face of God

The album features a guest appearance by Swedish artist Daniel Änghede on the track "Anima" and atmospheric narration by Simon Bibby on "Misanthrope River." The journey concludes with "Lethe," a reference to the river of forgetfulness in Greek mythology.
"In Somnolent Ruin" will be available on May 8, 2026, in various formats, including Digipak CD and limited-edition vinyl. Pre-orders are live now through Napalm Records.
