We were once different We sought something true And pure We traded that in For an empty void A meaningless piece That we’re told has value So we tell the world “Look what’s mine Look at what I did.” It was all for status Fueled by fear Of being left behind Of losing something That was never worth holding Of gaining some attention From those we’ll never know To meet some expectation That this is what should be done When we finally look back At a world devoid Will it have been worth it? When we’ve extracted everything And we’re still not full Will we extract ourselves? When we’re spent And we’ve lost all meaning Will we cheer? Or mourn All that we once had? This god has been forced upon us The conditions are set The more you hurt The more you gain They call it our nature As if it cannot change The environment breeds this Those who benefit Refuse to let go As long as it feeds them They’ll continue It won’t stop until there’s nothing left Every good thing we make Will be corrupted Is there still room for us in the world? It’s never been harder to be heard Through the noise I hope someone can hear this. Before we sign away it all To that which always feeds In this designed isolation No one is in control But everyone participates We’re all mirrors Hurting me hurts you This can be different Don’t look away. I want to be free There’s a light I can see There’s a world we could make A place we want to be We could step forward together I know the way things are But it doesn’t have to be this way Don’t you want this too?
