TESTAMENT Gears Up for New Album with Fresh Inspiration and Raw Energy

Chuck Billy reveals the thrash titans are primed to unleash their next sonic assault sooner than expected.

In a gritty revelation during an interview with the Appetite For Distortion podcast, TESTAMENT frontman Chuck Billy laid bare the band’s ambitions for a follow-up to their 2020 juggernaut, Para Bellum. The thrash legends are riding a creative wave, with Billy sharing that he, alongside guitarist Eric Peterson and drummer Chris Dovas, are churning out an arsenal of new tunes at an unprecedented pace. "We're probably gonna deliver records every couple of years instead of every four years at this pace right now," he declared, hinting at the unstoppable momentum now fueling their creative engine.

As TESTAMENT navigates the evolving metal landscape, Billy acknowledges the fire ignited by emerging bands. This fresh influx of raw talent inspires their songwriting while ensuring they remain distinct. "We can definitely be inspired by it, and I think we've done that kind of in our last record," he said, noting a modern flair that seeps into their music, reflecting a blend of tradition and innovation.

When it comes to the new wave of metal, Billy pointed to bands like Lorna Shore as drivers of inspiration, especially for Dovas, whose death metal fervor and blistering speed are set to electrify the upcoming album. "Eric loves black metal and loves playing fast, so it's a good combination for the two of them. They’re just really in a good writing groove right now," Billy added, revealing that the songwriting duo has already crafted around nine tracks, with hopes to hit the studio next summer.

But the journey doesn’t stop there. Billy expressed a fierce desire to push musical boundaries without losing the essence of TESTAMENT’s sound. "After 40 years, it’s exciting to find new voices and tones that I haven't used," he remarked, emphasizing a commitment to creativity and evolution. The interplay between classic influences and modern heaviness is at the forefront of their experimentation, promising a record that resonates with both old-school fans and new blood alike.

This creative surge follows a successful U.S. leg of their "Thrash Of The Titans" tour earlier this spring, where TESTAMENT shared the stage with fellow titans Overkill and Destruction, reminding the metal world of their relentless power. With Para Bellum showcasing the dynamic prowess of Dovas, a new era for TESTAMENT is on the horizon—one that blends the old with the new, ensuring they remain at the forefront of the thrash scene.
