SHINEDOWN's Eric Bass Takes a Bold Step Back for Mental Health

By Jason
In a courageous move, bassist Eric Bass prioritizes his mental well-being, paving the way for a duo of talented replacements during his hiatus.

In a raw and unfiltered chat with Rock 102.1 KFMA's Razor, SHINEDOWN guitarist Zach Myers opened up about the recent decision by bassist Eric Bass to step away from the touring grind. This isn’t just a minor hiatus; it’s a powerful statement about the importance of mental health in the unforgiving world of rock and roll. With Eric taking time to focus on his mental health, Josh Sturm from KAIROS and Zack Mack are stepping in to fill the bass void while he takes this necessary breather.

Myers, pulling no punches, articulated the relentless demands of life on the road. “This band is a full-time job, and it’s very busy,” he said, emphasizing the weight of the responsibilities each member carries. While he focuses on stage production and setlist curation, Eric handles the creative backbone, crafting music and mixing records. Myers reflected on the need for breaks, stating, “I think it was important for him to kind of take a mental stock and take a step back.” He’s optimistic about Eric’s return, noting the incredible talent of the substitutes who learned a staggering 45 songs in just four days.

The significance of this pause is amplified by SHINEDOWN's long-standing commitment to mental health advocacy. For over a decade, the band has partnered with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, using their platform to illuminate the often-taboo subject of mental health. Myers passionately stated, “If it even opens up the conversation… it means a lot to a lot of people.” This ethos of positivity is a refreshing change in a scene that often revels in darkness.

On July 10, Eric shared a heartfelt Instagram Reel where he candidly confessed to a “serious mental health crash.” He acknowledged the gravity of his situation, stating, “I don’t really feel it’s the wise thing for me to do to go out on tour right now.” His honesty is a testament to his character and a stark reminder that even rock icons face real struggles.

As he undergoes therapy and innovative treatments like Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), Eric’s journey reflects a growing understanding within the music community about the importance of mental health. The rock scene can be brutal, and his decision to step back shows not just vulnerability, but strength. SHINEDOWN continues to lead the charge in mental health awareness, proving that it’s possible to rock hard while also taking care of one’s mind.
