Question: Can you give a brief run-down on Bionic Jive's underground growth, prior to the Farmclub appearance? Was it a struggle to get heard?
Larry Love: We were lucky. Very early in the project an up and coming video director (Ryan Smith) offered to make a video for us for the song "Pump". The combination of the video along with our demo (plus a great attorney) helped us generate alot of interest in the band.
Question: Bionic Jive appeared on Farmclub tv, which led to the band signing a record deal. How did that whole process come about, what was the whole experience like?
LL: Our attorney built a buzz on the band which led to us showcasing for like, 10 labels at the Vyper Room in L.A. A rep from Farm Club was at that show and invited us to play on the show. The whole experience was off the hook! They really made you feel like a star on the set of that show. Needless to say, playing to an audience of 3 million plus so early in our career was nerve racking.
Question: How does it feel to be able to go into almost any record store across America and find your album?
LL: It's mind blowing. We are thankful for the shot we have, and plan to make the most if it.
Question: As far as subject and lyrical content goes, what does Armageddon Through Your Speakers handle? Was there any main theme you wanted to get across to listeners on this cd?
LL: The album is very diverse, lyrically. If there is a theme, it's not to get categorized into one thing. We got socio-political songs, to party tracks, to battle rhymms, to break shit tracks. The album reflects what life is.
Question: How do you feel Bionic Jive hold up with most of the current hip-hop flavored rock?
LL: We don't hate anyone. However, we do feel we are doing something different than anyone else. It's life long, real hip hop MC's over raw, hard, competent rock. To date I haven't seen or heard the same formula.
Question: Now that the album's out, and you're on the road, what are some future goals for the band?
LL: We just want to keep touring and with that get radio and MTV on board to turn more people onto what we are about.
Question: Besides Bionic Jive, what do you think of the current music scene?
LL: There's alot of stuff we are digging -Deftones, Korn and Incubus, to Eminem and D-12. I really like how kids are not genre specific with their musical tastes. It's common for kids now to be equally into stuff as diverse as Jill Scott and Slayer, and that's dope.
Question: You are touring with Kottonmouth Kings throughout the month. How's life on the road treating you?
LL: We love KMK!! We honestly didn't know much about them before we toured with them and D-12 in the Fall. We hit it off with them the first night of the tour. It's the kind of connection where I know we made life long friends-and their fans are loving us-some of the rowdiest fans I've ever seen.
Question: This kind of goes hand-in-hand with the last question, what are your thoughts on illegal substances (ie: marijuana) considering you are currently playing with KMK, who are known to have quite a fondness for "herbal refreshments"?
LL: I personally don't smoke but I'm down 100% on the personal freedom issue of legalizing marijuana. Merg is a huge KMK fan-he's always on their bus-I have no idea what they are doing on there though :)
Question: 2001 is wrapping up, what would you say are your top 5 albums this year (besides your own)?
LL: 1) Tek-9 - Angellic
2) Deftones - White Pony
3) P.O.D. - Satellite
4) RassKass - Van Gough
5) System of a Down - Toxicity
Question: What are your thoughts on the internet? Do you interact with fans much online?
LL: We owe alot to the net. We try to personally answer all our own e-mail. As for next year, we are setting it up to post pics after each show and talk live once a week from the road on our site.
Question: What song from Armageddon... would you say best captures the whole Bionic Jive sound?
LL: I would have to say none. But if I had to pick one song to show the world it would be "I Shot Lucifer".
Question: Dream tour: If you had the chance to select 3 groups/artists to hit the road with, who would they be & why?
LL: 1) Ozzfest-It's Ozzy, need I say more? 2) Eminem-he's our favorite MC and we love to play to hip-hop audiences. 3) Korn-We've loved what they've done since the beginning.
Question: Any parting words before we wrap this interview up? Now's the chance for any rants and/or raves you'd like to get off your chest.
LL: All good. Thanks for your time. Come see us on tour! We are very accessible at shows and always hang with our fans. One Love.
