Morbid Angel Concert Review
Alright fellow metalheads! Time to tell you about my night at the Pound, San Francisco. Although I must apologize for not having any pictures, I didn't bring a camera for the simple reason of not having one at the moment. But nonetheless, great show, worth telling, and also...I was dead front at the venue.
First off, to get to the pound, we had to pass through the ghetto parts of SF. Pimps, prostitutes, gangs, drugdealers, etc. So of course, the best thing to do is to lock all doors in the car and have all windows shut. Trust me, this place isn't very good. But now to the venue, The Pound:
We got there at about 8pm and hoped that the line wasn't going to be so long. Thanks to ordering tickets in advanced though, we really didn't have to worry and got in pretty quickly. But before we could get in, actually, two metalheads started fighting in the middle of where we were at. Both of them had very unorthodox styles in fighting and seemed to know what they were doing. My friend Andrew and I watched attentively. Before we knew it, one of the guys threw a huge kick to the other guys face and bashed his head open. Damn, there was literally blood everywhere hahaha. So that was quite fun to watch. Those guys were actually friends, I think. So off to the venue...
The Pound has always been a great place! A bar, cool places, small but kick ass. I bought a Morbid Angel shirt before the show started and Andrew bought a Behemoth shirt. I was actually wearing my Darkthrone-Transilvanian Hunger shirt but didn't feel like getting my new shirt stolen, so I wore it too. Unfortunately, Andrew was wearing a Himsa shirt, a band in which he loves, but he'll grow out of them...ESPECIALLY after the show.
When we were waiting for the set of Despised Icon to start, we noticed a huge drumset covered in the middle of the stage. In front of it was a smaller drumset, for the bands to play. We knew that the large drumset covered belonged to none other than Pete Sandoval from Morbid Angel. So Andrew and I got pretty excited.
So first band comes up...Despised Icon. We all had that discussion after Amon's little comment about them. So sorry Amon, I decided not to heckle them. What I decided was to see how this band actually performs, if they're any good. And I must say, I didn't expect much from them, but they weren't so bad. Definitely music to just flat out headbang to. Their drummer was very talented and to me, the most talented from the rest of the band. The band also used a duel vocals approach, in which the two vocalists would take turns on growling their asses off. One of them, I thought was actually pretty good and sounded like the vocalist from a local band called Animosity. Butr sadly, the other one had to leave. He was trying a little to hard, so I guess that's the one Amon was talking about. They were very respectful to our crowd and gave us a good show. They also told us to give a round of applause to Krisiun, Behemoth, and Morbid Angel. So they seemed like pretty cool guys. When their set ended, I got to shake hands with the good vocalist and told him they did a good job. They were overall, not so bad. They're a new band and I'm sure they'll progress to be better. From all the songs, they only had one solo, which was a bit of a letdown, but good show nonetheless.
Next band that came up was KRISIUN! OMFGBBQ! These guys are fucking HUGE!! They would woop anyone's ass, I must say. Damn Brazillians... anyways, the crowd went insane when they started playing! Max Kolesne was KILLER on the drums, anyone who ever had doubts about Krisiun, I suggest you see them live ASAP! They are fucking amazing! At about half the set, Moyses' guitar fucked up that kind of ruined the song for them. You can hear people saying..."WHAT THE FUCK??!!" So as Moyses went to fix his guitar, his brother Max decided to help redeem themselves from the minor technical difficulty. He gave the fans an unbelievable kickass drum solo that left everyone speechless. He is amazing on drums, I kid you not. Alax Camargo was a beast growling to the fans. One of the best growlers I've heard, actually. One hell of a show and worth watching again. GO SEE KRISIUN!
Next band came BEHEMOTH! They of course played one hell of a set and played a lot from Demigod. Their presence was so intense! Nergel was very good with having the fans feel like they were part of the show. Inferno's drumming was by far the most affecting, as you can literally feal the blastbeats go through your body. That shit was fucking LOUD! Then when Nergel began talking about Behemoth's roots, I got very excited waiting for the black metal song Amon was talking about. So Behemoth played a song I've never heard before that went all the way back to 1992. So I was guessing it was be much black metal, but I wasn't very impressed. They decided to fuse their death metal vocals into it which made me a bit disappointed. But it was ok, as I still liked the set. Their last song they played, Nergel came out with the Demigod costumed, and everyone when BALListic! I wouldn't mind seeing Behemoth again. That was one hell of a show.
and finally...*drumroll*....MORBID FUCKING ANGEL!!!!
The sheets blocking the huge pearl drumset and Sandoval came out to give us a bit of a drumcheck. Damn that guy is fucking brilliant! He drumrolls like it's nothing and that double bass is like a stampede of horses. Once they were done checking the instruments, the rest of the band came out and everyone put up the devil horns \m/ David Vincent is one huge guy...we're talking about 6'6" or 6'7". You do NOT want to fuck with that guy. He was a little shorter than the height of the drumset, which shows that the drumset is pretty huge. This show was by far the best show of the night! When they played Maze of Torment, I headbanged through the whole song. Tony Norman and Trey Azagthoth's duel guitar attack was crucifying! Yes, I said CRUCIFYING hahaha. Finally, when they played Immortal Rites and Chapel of Ghouls, it made me realize how much I love this band. Morbid Angel IS my favorite death metal band, and seeing them, I now have a new respect for death metal in general. Trust me, to anyone, Morbid Angel is a band you must not go through life without seeing live. You will regret it for the rest of your life.
So that concludes my night at the pound. Amazing night, we were their till 2am in the morning. If this tour is coming to you soon, I suggest you get tickets now. They're playing at the pound tonight again, and I wish I could go to see them. But money money...I have no money. Well thank you all...my first death metal concert, and perhaps the most memorable.
