Previous Converge Concert Reviews

It was a rainy day, me and my friends got there just in time for the Bronx. I had never heard of this band until today. They are a rock/punkish band. You can probably say that they are like Black Flag mixed with AC/DC like influences. They had a very energetic set, the crowd was really into them and they had good showmanship. At one point in fact, the singer jumped into the pit and sang while he was being pushed around. I personally loved the music. This is definately a band I'm gonna pay some attention to.

Next up, I got me a Jack & Coke, got a little buzz and then got ready for the Converge set. Right out of the gate, the place erupted! This was my first time at the Phoenix and its a pretty decent club/venue. It was really pack, I think this show ended up getting sold out. So when Converge did their thing, I jumped into the pit. I thought it would be all "Hardcore dancing" and shit like that but it was actually a real bloody pit. They create alot of atmosphere in their music and the crowd received it well. They were also very energetic and were running all over the stage.

Finally, Mastodon. First up they had this intro music and then they burst into "March of the Fire Ants". Great fucking song to start a set! I was in the pit for the first 5 songs and then I realised I broke my necklace and I got whacked in the back of my head. So I went to the back a little where my friends were standing and watched the rest of the set from there. The thing about Mastodon's set was that they played some good HEAVY music, but they didn't have the same energy as Converge and The Bronx. When you're in the pit, you feed off the energy of the crazy motherfuckers around you but then when you stand back and just watch them, they kinda seemed boring to me for some parts. Then 2/3 through the set, the guitarist mentions that this is probably the last time they are in gonna play in Canada because aparantly they had some trouble at the boarder. I don't blame him, but that kinda soured the mood among the crowd. They played a few tracks from their new album which I think is officially out today. Decent stuff, but I still prefered the Remission songs they played. Probably cuz its the most familiar one to me. Then finally, for the "encore", they played a 10 minute song. By the end of it my brain was about to drain.

Overall, it was a good night. Got home stinking with a fucked up hearing.
