Transcending both supergroup clichés and easily identifiable genre tags, Sweden’s most promising new band DEVIAN is poised to bridge the gap between the extremity of modern metal and the melody of days of yore on its debut album, Ninewinged Serpent. Brimming with talent and years of metal know-how, the band boasts former Marduk members Legion (vocals) and Emil (drums), both of whom left the band with the desire to develop a new sound based on their understanding of where extreme metal should go next while incorporating more traditional heavy metal influences. The result is an unstoppable organic extreme metal machine driven by a raving hunger and unquestionable determination.
After an intense year of songwriting, DEVIAN hit Sweden’s Art Decay Studio with producer Rickard Kottelin (The Legion) to record their first opus Ninewinged Serpent. Mixing duties for the album were handled by sound-wizard Fredrik Nordström at Studio Fredman (Arch Enemy, Dimmu Borgir) while the final punch in mastering came courtesy of Peter In De Betou / Tailor Maid and Greece’s dark artwork master Seth (Paradise Lost, Soilwork, Old Man’s Child, etc.) suitably packaged the release with a very morbid visual theme, which nicely enhances the album’s thick and bleak lyrical content.
Not wanting to be pigeonholed by the ex-Marduk moniker, Legion and Emil decided to go for a more dynamic old school vibe built on a catchy combination of melody and aggression. Drawing on the intensity of extreme metal innovators like Slayer, Possessed, Morbid Angel and Dissection, DEVIAN infuses this general thread of destructive chaos with strains of the brand of harmony Judas Priest, Motorhead and Iron Maiden made famous in the ‘80s.
Legion had the following to say about Ninewinged Serpent: “It’s a pummeling blackened death thrasher, where we really tried to challenge ourselves and bring fresh elements to the music compared to our efforts in previous projects. Its no-bullshit raving metal straight from the heart charged with uncontrollable anger, haunting melodies and bone crushing heaviness. It’s got a lot of power and soul and we are all extremely proud of what we’ve managed to achieve. Ninewinged Serpent is a truly infernal Scandinavian metal overkill destined to leave sonic scars!”
