Hailing from Southern California, the four members of Project 86 take the basic elements of modern, hard-edged music (reminiscent of Tool), and mix a serious dose of aggressive rap-styled vocals, yielding an intense sound that places them in the same arena with bands like Rage Against The Machine, Deftones, and Korn.
Project 86 began its cross pollination of genres two years ago when Schwab and drummer Alex Albert's longtime dream finally came together. Joined by guitarist Randy Torres and bass player Steven Dail, Project 86 spent several months honing its hip-hop influenced hardcore sound often referred to as "rapcore," and now the band is ready to spread it's wings well beyond the Orange County scene where they've been known to share the stage with the likes of the Supertones. Five Iron Frenzy, and Stavesacre. Schwab is the bands primary lyricist and says Project 86's music has two very distinct purposes, the first being a physical response to what listeners hear on the self titled debut from BEC, and especially live in concert. "We just want to write music that makes people go psycho, " Schwab says. "That's basically our goal. When we sit to write a song, we just say to ourselves 'okay, is that going to make kids and us go crazy? Is this going to drive the emotion leve lof our audience to the extreme?"
The second response Project 86 hopes to invoke is also aimed at the recipient's emotions, but this time they're looking for a more substantial and longterm end to the unconventional means. "Our music is meant to probe," Schwab says. "Our music is meant to strip away all of that surfacy stuff. Our music, when reduced to its essentials, should strip away everything surfacy and get to the core of the indivdual listening. I don't deal with any peripheral issues. The lyrics are about my soul, the state of my soul, and how what I do affects my soul and how my soul needs something.
In the studio, Project 86 enlisted the help of noted engineer Bryan Carlstrom (White Zombie, Alice In chains, Orange 9MM, Biohazard, Jane's Addiction, Anthrax) to produced the new project. Working with Carlstrom gave the band a certain measure of confidence that they feel will ultimately push them over the top in a musical quest of sorts. "Project 86 is based on big dreams, big vocals, and lofty expectations," Schwab says. "Our hard work, determination, and faith in God has brought us all together. We have said to ourselves that we want to be the best band that's ever done this."
