Does hair length affect Metallica's songwriting?

Metallica The members of Metallica have changed their hair style with each passing album, sometimes chopping off a good foot of hair between album cycles. Since I had a lot of free time on my hands this weekend, I decided to plot the bands average hair length on a graph and compare it to the average critics review score. From the bands early days with near glam metal hair to it's shortened cuts in the 90's, it appears that Metallica's hair has expressed it's music throughout the years.

Looking at the results, it would be a safe bet to figure out their hair length while writing/recording and see if it will be an album worth picking up.

I just wanted to say I love all of metallica's tracks but I would trade justice for any of their newer stuff!! but I do love METALLICA!!!..

too much time on your hands this weekend??? just kidding. good work, but not sure about your conclusion that metallica's longer hair made for better songwriting. perhaps the short hair led to an adverse reaction from critics (most of whom are fans themselves), who then rated albums worse. in reality, load's a better album than st. anger. it's just less METAL.

I haven't noticed the length of their hair lately as their heads have been so far up their own asses that its impossible to tell..I'll just have to take your word that it matters.

I just stopped by this thread to let you know I haven't stopped laughing at the title and picture

i don't know what to say. I actually wondered this very thing when i saw their haircuts while promoting Load. When was it that Lars bleached his hair? That was really bad. I have a feeling that all albums will go downhill from here as Lars is losing his hair.

steiner666 - 2009-04-06 13:18:11
they should have just split up after justice... maybe after the black album at the latest. they became a totally different band afterwards as far as i'm concerned

without trujillo they could have released another load!thank god!death magnetic rules!!!

yes, I must admit this project really killed my weekend, aside from watching Metallica get inducted.

Now I know what the webmaster did all weekend!

stream27 - 2009-04-06 08:20:44
so far as I'm concerned, the highest points on the graph WERE the best albums, the high points being around Master of Puppets, hands down one of my favourite metal albums of all time. then again, this was also when Cliff was still with the band... coincidence? I think not...

benben85 - 2009-04-06 07:23:08
I think Rob Trujillo brought the bands hair length average up. He has the longest hair in the band, reaches his ass when not braided or in a pony tail.

vomitgod - 2009-04-06 07:20:41
interesting. I didn't think their hair was that long during Death Magnetic recordings though, albeit longer than Load through St. Anger.

Seriously, this was a major pain in the ass to compile. Had to create scales for ever fucking photo. Also used photos while they were recording, not the promo photos after the fact. Another interesting thing was Load and Reload are bashed by metal fans, but critics didn't hate this era as much as fans.
