The Gauntlet: Metallica Metal News

Metallica Denies First Single Off "Death Magnetic" Is Political

Metallica - Death Magnetic Metallica has denied that 'The Day That Never Comes' is an attempt to send a political statement about America's ongoing involvement with the war in Iraq. The video for the song, which is due to be released in early September, depicts a solider aiding a wounded solider. The song will be the first single off the bands new album.

Speaking about the track, frontman James Hetfield told MTV News he hoped the band could put “the human element in what is an unfortunate part of life.

“There are people over there dealing with situations like this, and we're showing the human part of being there,” he said.

"There are so many celebrities that soapbox their opinions, and people believe it's more valid because they're popular. For us, people are people — you should all have your own opinion.”

Hetfield told MTV that he hoped the video would help “cut through” peoples opinions of the war.

“The politics and the religion tend to separate people, and what we're trying to do is bring it together with the common thread of resentment and forgiveness,” he added.

'The Day That Never Comes' is the first song from the bands eagerly anticipated new album 'Death Magnetic', which is released worldwide on September 12th.

Metallica are of the original Bay Area Thrash Bands who made their mark with political and social aware lyrics. Bob Rock pushed Metallica away from the socio-political lyrics to make them appeal to a wider audience. I say it's f'in high time the boys found the angst(their balls) that made them the best metal band of the time. As long as the new album brings back the attitude that makes a band metal in the first place I'm game to show my Metalikatz roots. Anything less and they may as well retire and stop getting the hopes up of those of us that were there at the beginning, talking Metallica up to everyone we met to convert everyone to follow them or die. Another crap fest like St Anger and I'm afraid I'll have to walk away for good.

If you look back at the earlier albums you will see that Metallica is not a stanger to touching base on religion or politics. snowy white you are on the right track.

They may not be trying to send any type of political statement but it will be preceived as such. And more power to 'em. I have a feeling they might be just trying to downplay any political ideas as not to offend half the population. Remember Lars, heavy metal is a left wing art form (apart from "The Nuge") and the subject material like this will be appreciated by metal fans, seemingly the only people still buying METALLICA albums. This impending single/video is one more reason I'm looking forward to the new record. Can't say I've done that since "Justice..."
