Metallica wants you to pay to watch commercials

Lars Ulrich (Phote Credit: Ross Halfin) Metallica's latest foray into "bleed the fans of every last drop" has just launched and it's called Mission Metallica. The bands latest 'mission' allows fans to watch several commercials over the coming months until the album is released in September. Most bands would upload their videos to MySpace or Youtube from their studio sessions...not corporate giants Metallica. Metallica wants you to pay up to $124.99 for the platinum experience and to watch them create their latest studio opus.

One would think Metallica would use a bit of tact and give what fans they have left a bone. After the mountain of a shitstorm they caused going after fans for filetrading, it is time Metallica offers an olive branch and let all fans view the studio footage without paying up to $124.99.

Metallica wants to charge fans $24.99 to watch their studio video and get a digital version of the album. $8 more and you get a physical copy of the album too. And if you feel like really impressing your date, why not get the Limited Edition package for $124.99 and get some lithographs. Ofcourse you can always wait a few days for the band to post the watered down videos on youtube, only problem is the editor didn't cut enough of Lars out.

NIN's shit has been totally unmemorable since 94. And after the backlash Metallica received after releasing the Loads doesn't mean they are not great albums. They are excellent albums. Metallica knew they were going to piss some people off with them, but they did it anyway, because they aren't afraid to try new shit. St. Anger wasn't that great an album, but every band has a bad album in their library. Megadeth with Risk? Cryptic Writings. That doesn't mean they suck. And Metallica records most of their studio shit, so of course it's their people behind the camera. Who gives a shit? Oh yeah, remember those documentaries "Paradise Lost I&@?" Metallica let those film makers use their music for FREE. They could have got hundreds of thousands of dollars for the shit, let alone some points. That's how greedy they are huh? They play lots of free shows, and some for charity. Like the bridge school shows. It gets old. Tons of bands would switch places with Metallica for their success if they could. They have made some of the most signifigant metal albums in metal history. So give them the respect and credit they deserve.

Ok, first of all, I viewed this "editorial" about 30 minutes after you posted it and the ENTIRE last paragraph was not on here! You added/edited it after I blasted you with my first response full of the FACTS about the site. Secondly, "One would think Metallica would use a bit of tact and give what fans they have left a bone. After the mountain of a shitstorm they caused going after fans for filetrading," That is your quote! And you are going to tell me that you didn't write this to try and start a "shitstorm" yourself. My whole arguement about this "piece" is that you intentionaly twisted it to try and make Metallica look bad. To say otherwise is ridiculous. You are trying to get people to read your "editorial" at all cost. No matter who's repuation you damage in the process. My focus is/was to expose it to damage yours. If you want to write about music, more power to you. Just do it honestly for gods sakes. Don't put the "hate Metallica" spin on it. That's not creative, it's the punk way out. One last thing, I'm still waiting on your PROOF that Metallica is making a killing off this site. Show me the PROOF. You are a journalist right? You surely have the proof to back up your comments. Show it to me. And no, your opinion of what you think you know is not proof!

kristychomp - 2008-05-28 23:35:35
I didnt realize the gauntlet had so many metallica fans jeez!!

chief_wiggum - 2008-05-28 23:34:14
Beatallica is a great band and it was very cool of Lars to step up and help them out. So naive if you think metallica's media people are shooting this for WB...it's not WB's people behind the camera. I really don't care if the money goes to Jesus christ, it is still a lot of money to pay for virtually nothing but the album. I like Metallica and will buy the album from Traget when it comes out. It will probably cost me $11.99 that way. Another thing, NIN may have had a good release 14 years ago, but it has been 16 years for Metallica for a solid release.

beholder505 - 2008-05-28 22:53:24
There's a reason NIN is givin' their shit away for free. Come on man, they haven't put anything good out in 14 years. Nobody is holding a gun to anyones head and saying "You have to pay extra to buy the album" You'll still be able to buy it at the store or fuckin' itunes. Bottom line. If you haven't liked them since whenever, and still don't like them, don't waste time. And prove that Metallica was the first band to demand 18,99 for their albums. Bullshit. Where do you get all of your info from? Show me where Metallica is getting a huge chunk from the MM site. Sure, they own their music, but that site is all Warner Bros. and it's good promotion. So W.B. makes money off of the Mission site, and Metallica makes the money on the albums. And Metallica owes nobody anything. If you're a loyal fan, great it's because you like their music, if you don't that's great too. Don't go on the site, don't buy the shit, don't go see them. Everybody is acting like you have to buy all of this shit to get the album. If you don't want to pay for the extra shit, then just get it when it comes out. Another thing. Ever hear of the band "Beattallica?" Well, if you haven't, they are a gimmick band that combines the music of Metallica and the Beatles. Sony/ATV who owns much of the Beatles catalog was trying to sue the band for copyright infringement. Metallica gave Beatallica their lawyer Peter Peterno FREE OF CHARGE to fight the case and they won. Yeah, their such greedy assholes. Type in Beatallica on wiki and look under "legal problems" and you can check it out for yourself.

pieceofshit - 2008-05-28 11:49:08
there is a reason when they play livem 90% of their setlist is from the 80's. Even they know the new material sucks.

steiner666 - 2008-05-28 11:20:18
Wow, what a really lame way to blow a lot of money! After hearing the live versions of their two new songs, I didn't think anyone would even buy for the album, let alone these stupid extras. And what sort of naive idiot do you have to be to believe that Metallica's Napster tantrum did ANYTHING to deter music piracy? All they succeeded in was taking down the Napster name, and dozens more spawned in its place - as well as, of course, making people hate the band. And I'm not just being a senseless Metallica-hater, I used to love them, as recently as the S&M album/dvd, but you get sick of hearing their only good songs (which are about 2 decades old now) after so many times, and if anything I think they should be charging less and less for their shows/albums instead of jacking it up. It's not a metallica-hating thing. If any of my favorite bands didn't put out a good album for more than a decade and THEN starting doing/charging what Metallica have been, they would no longer be my favorite bands.

dickweedjon - 2008-05-28 08:43:52
The only thing I see as factually incorrect is the headline. You can watch the commercials for free. I read this article when it was posted and nothing has changed. I actually just bought a membership for $25, but I do see the point. I do feel it is a bit pricey for what I get, but it is Metallica and they are GODS!!!

admin - 2008-05-28 07:39:26
The edit made was i changed the title from 'Metallica Wants to Fuck you in the Ass' to the current. I also changed the price to .99 instead of .95. Show me what I am wrong about. Your only argument is that the band doesn't own the site. I think you are a bit naive. The band will collect the money as they own the works being viewed and purchased. And yes, this is an editorial piece, not a news item. That is why it is on the frontpage of the site in WHITE, not YELLOW. As for me being upset I can't download their album for free, far from the truth. I actually wrote several editorials during the Napster days in support of Metallica. I caught much more shit for those than I am now. I am all for the corporate machine that is the music industry, without it, i'd be out of a job. My point of the piece is that Metallica is charging far to much for an sub-par product. This is not a commentary on their music. I stated I'd gladly pay double for some of their albums. I even paid $200 x 2 to see Metallica play at the Wiltern 2 weeks ago and had a great time.

gonenuckinfuts - 2008-05-28 06:54:32
Just bow out dude. It is obvious that this article is written by a Metallica hater for all the Metallica haters out there (a.k.a. people who whine because they can't steal music anymore) The "original" article (nice edit by the way moron) twisted the information in such a way that anyone who doesn't know about the TRUTH of the site would jump on the hate Metallica bandwagon. This BLOG, because is sure as hell isn't a news article, just shows that any punk with a computer can misinform at will. I encourage everyone that reads this to actually go to the site and find out the TRUTH about it. Don't take this "article" as the reality because it is far from it.

admin - 2008-05-28 06:32:38
First of all, why pay for a 320 digital rip of the album? Where is the FLAC option? I pay for FLAC all the time when I purchase Metallica live shows. You are right, the fans have made Metallica rich. Fans made Nine Inch Nails rich too (although not as rich as Metallica) and they are giving their music away for free. Metallica seems to be going in the opposite direction of other artists with digital music. Show me a link you can buy the album for $20 if you are not a fanclub member?

beholder505 - 2008-05-27 22:26:53
Where's your info from? Show me where Metallica gets a HUGE chunk from MM. Before you jump on the "Metallica are a bunch of greedy fux" bandwagon, give up some proof. The site is run through W.B. and you can buy the album and have it at your door the day it is released for 20 bux. No shipping, flat rate. Normal price of the CD. Metallica made their money through making albums that people like and buy. The fans made them rich. "Lars greed knows no end" if we all had the chance to have the money they do, we would be on it in a second. Save the Bullshit. Gigantour is sposered by Hot Topic for cryin' out loud. Hot Topic? So is Megadeth selling out? Is Bodom? You can buy VIP packages where you can meet Megadeth before the show. And it ain't cheap. Metallica has meet and greets before EVERY show. And they are very cool. If you don't like Metallica, fine. But save the greedy bastards bullshit.

Bushmaster_Hammer - 2008-05-27 22:07:42
Typical Metallica!! Being little bitches to sell probably sell some once again overrated commercial music!!

Metallicadrummer - 2008-05-27 20:29:07
Let me just explain the picture. It was cold out. You all know how cold it gets in San Francisco. I call shrinkage!

thegauntlet - 2008-05-27 19:36:19
So you think $24.99 is a good price for a digital album? Or $32.99 for a physical album?

Dave Mustaine - 2008-05-27 19:24:23
Fantastic job in attempting to misinform readers. The only people that have to pay are the ones that want to pay for additional content. The majority of the "commercials" will be free for all to view.

chief_wiggum - 2008-05-27 19:05:33
Metallica owns all their material. They just use the label to distribute and get the album out. If the label owns Mission Metallica, they probably get 10-20% max as they don't own the material. How much do they charge fan club members to be in the club? I don't know, but fan clubbers probably just get to watch the online videos, no downloads of the album once it is available.

Etiam - 2008-05-27 19:03:49
Metallica isn't the first to engage in this kind of marketing. Artistshare does this extensively, but their packages are generally far more appealing than what Metallica's offering here, given the price. Making a midnight download and 'shipped to your door' copy of the CD seem like big deals is a little misleading, I would say, since this kind of thing goes on all the time (Hello USPS?). If Metallica weren't multi-platinum artists living off their legacy, this kind of deal would be laughable.

gonenuckinfuts - 2008-05-27 18:52:03
Just wondering....where are you getting your information that Metallica is getting a "HUGE chunk" from this. Can I have that source?? The source of my information is the site itself. Oh, and by the way, the platinum content includes live shows (for free) and the album + download is $19.99. And the physical copy is delivered to your doorstep (and that includes shipping) As I stated earlier, "Loyal Fans" such as, oh I don't know, FAN CLUB MEMBERS, get the platinum content for free. Stop trying to misinform to make 'Tallica look bad.

admin - 2008-05-27 18:30:26
1st, Metallica gets a HUGE chuck from this, a larger piece than Warner Bros. 2nd, download the album for $24.99??? That's insane. I have always been a fan, but the band is too greedy. Metallica was the 1st band to demand $18.99 for their albums. I didn't have a prob back in the day as the albums kicked ass. I would have easily paid double for the usage and joy I got out of them. 3rd, I am all for capitalism. I just think Metallica owes fans that have been loyal. $32.99 for a download and copy of the album? Why do I need to download it if I am getting a copy? Why not make them the same price? That's one expensive album. 4th, I realize that the 3rd package for $124.99 is for collectors. But what you are getting again isn't worth that price. I have purchased several of the bands live shows from their livemetallica.com site, most recently the Wiltern show in LA which I attended.

Thaichick - 2008-05-27 18:22:02
is that picture of Lars real? He has a teeny weenie LOL!

Ura_Douchebag - 2008-05-27 18:08:17
You're a moron! Do your research!

chief_wiggum - 2008-05-27 17:54:37
dont like it dont buy it

gonenuckinfuts - 2008-05-27 17:54:35
First of all, get your stuff straight. The $124.95 includes a ton of other stuff. The album delivered to your door step, a midnight download of the album, a 5LP 180 gram box with 5 sleeves, a Mission Metallica Lithograph and the Platinum Content. The actual price for the Platinum Content starts at $24.95 and that includes a midnight download of the new album when it is released. Thirdly, us FAN CLUB MEMBERS get the platinum content for FREE!!! Thank you very much! And finally, if that isn't enough to get the facts straigh on your little story, THIS ISN'T A METALLICA RAN WEBSITE! IT IS OWNED AND OPERATED BY WARNER BROS!!!!!

admin - 2008-05-27 17:38:47
i'd just like to see a little goodwill from the band. I was completely on their side fighting the mp3 pirates, I still bought their last 3 albums, even though I knew they were crap (ok i got them free but i still listened to them). I just feel the band can give a little back to it's fans. $24.95 - $124.95 is a lot of money to pay.

RaspberryBadfinger - 2008-05-27 17:36:23
Lars' greed knows no end.

kristychomp - 2008-05-27 17:34:05
somebody got up on the wrong side of the bed. Although i do see your point, i wouldnt pay 125 bux to watch them argue in the studio
