Galactic Pegasus "Phantom of the Hill" Album Review

The song "Jenova" is a freaking masterpiece……hoooooly shit folks. Better grab ahold of your nuts before you push play…..just sayin'. This is a great introduction for the entire band. I appreciate the rhythmic bounce of the riff. It really plays into the heaviness and I enjoy hearing that. Everyone is showing off and it's good. "Thanatos," the Greek word for death, is an impassioned and brutal exposition of a man's honest understanding of his mortality. The breakdowns are so expressive and passionate. Particularly on the track "Hourglass" of which, I am sure, once you hear it you will agree with me.
I love how the lyrics throughout this entire record leaves enough of an opening for the listener to come up with their own thing about what they mean. Musically the structure rises and digresses in such a human way and I love that. With all the assholes out there in the djent scene that scream lyrics that mean nothing, these guys are actually saying something. I've got to tell you guys that I appreciate that. This is right on par with djent masterpiece "Dig Deep" by the kings of mayhem After The Burial. That's right guys.
Statement from the band:
Phantom Of The Hill’ is an album that has taken a very long time (almost two years) to produce. During this time, we had a lineup change and several other factors which contributed to the final product. The instrumental aspect of the album was written in thirds by Andrew Baena, Johnny Ciardullo, and Cooper Lagace. Once the demo phase of the instrumental was near completion, Andrew Hockley started to write lyrics. Johnny was a new addition to the writing process, and as such, he brought a unique taste to the pallet with five of his tracks making it into the final version. The lyrical inspirations came from both metaphysical, and universal concepts as well as personal experiences and references to events in the past.
Andrew Hockley had the following to say in regards to the lyrics:
“I sat down with each song and hashed them out in my mind conceptually to form a core idea that could stand alone before allotting words and phrases to the demo tracks. With this in mind I made it my goal to tie the knots together rhythmically and thematically. In that regard I ended up with a variety of subjects that I drew completely from my personal life experiences. I saw a range of material emerge. Some songs ended up with quite literal lyrics, such as in ‘Bottoms Up,’ a track which shines light on corporate monopoly of Monster Energy and my mild addiction to it. In contrast to this, other songs have more abstract meanings. For example, I came up with a more abstract ‘Thanatos,’ which is a song written from the perspective of the main character of a novel I was writing back in high-school.’ It was when writing the lyrics to our title track ‘Phantom of the Hill’ that I felt like I was entirely in my own element. The song was written completely around the concept of pure desire, and is a noteworthy milestone to my state of thinking at the time. The song’s lyrics were associated with the cover artwork, but does not reflect an overall concept of the album.”
We haven’t done an official studio recorded release since ‘Pariah’ (2014). ‘Phantom Of The Hill’ will be our first full length album as well as our debut release with Famined Records. We are extremely excited to release this album, and to be working with Famined.
