Check Out “Pious Abnormality†from Of Feather and Bone
Denver’s Of Feather and Bone recently premiered a new two-song EP, Pios Abnormality. The crushing tunes are the first recorded efforts from the band since their Embrace the Wretched full-length, which came out last year on Good Fight Music.
Furnishing punishing brutality among crippling blast beats and impressive vocal delivery, Pios Abnormality sees Of Feather and Bone exploring Blackened Grindcore and Doom, a leveled-up progression of their already searing, Crust-and-Hardcore-inspired sound.
“We wrote our last album, Embrace the Wretched Flesh, a year before it was released by Good Fight Music,†Of Feather and Bone vocalist / bassist Alvino Salcedo said. “By the time the record had come out, we were already on a [new musical] path. We decided the best course of action was to tour on the [Embrace the Wretched Flesh] to help promote that [album] and keep writing at bay.â€
Of Feather and Bone toured extensively throughout 2015 with the likes of Axis, Gatecreeper, Old Wounds, and others, playing shows on both coasts and in cities in between. The band settled in after landing back in Denver to record the Pios Abnormality EP earlier this year.
The EP’s title track is a cocktail of dissonance and hollowed-out production, where in Salcedo’s ferocious gutturals and scaling howls echo among treble and rumbling tremolo. Second song, “Resounding from the Depths,†escalates the extremes with impressive genre-blending and drummer Preston Weippert’s tenacious strikes. The EP is at times slamming and at times sludgy--a high-step, circle-pit ready release that sounds like what Primitive Man would do if they opted for speed instead of weed.
“We had always written to keep creativity flowing, but when we started to focus on these two songs, the progression and evolution to this sound was natural,†Salcedo said. “Dave [Grant], our guitarist, is a genius and had been working on these songs for some time, and when we finally took time to write and arrange them, the finished product was something we were very happy with, and the sound [was something] we’ve been wanting to release to people.â€
Gauntlet: I read you’ll be writing and recording a new full-length album soon; will the new material follow the suit of Pious Abnormality, or a mix of other sounds and textures?
OFAB> We are aiming to follow close to the sound you hear with these two new songs and hopefully even more focus on a cryptic Death-Grind kind of sound. So expect lots of blasts and soundscapes, and a sort of eerie and somber tone from it all.
Gauntlet: The new EP is limited to 50 cassette copies; will there be download options for those of us without tape decks?
OFAB> The two songs will be available on Spotify, iTunes, Amazon.com, etc. and also for download from our bandcamp, www.OfFeatherAndBone666.bandcamp.com.
Gauntlet: Other than writing and recording new material, what can we expect from Of Feather and Bone in the near future?
OFAB> We are honored to be playing this year’s Denver Black Sky festival with some of our really close friends and other really great bands. Other than a handful of Denver dates and some other touring we can’t announce yet, we will be going into hiding to write and record the next LP which will hopefully see a release in the fall of 2017.
