Why is Marijuana Illegal? A Brief Review of the Legislative Debate that Lead to the Prohibition of Pot

Barry Donegan While my Libertarian viewpoint that prohibition of any vice or victimless crime causes more
crime than it prevents may not be commonly shared enough to hit critical mass, CNN held a recent poll wondering if Americans are ready for H.R. 5843, a Barney Frank and Ron Paul cosponsored piece of legislation decriminalizing personal use of marijuana by responsible adults. The findings were an overwhelming shift in public opinion. The Time/CNN poll found only 34% of those surveyed believed that small personal amounts of marijuana should result in jailtime. Clearly there is impetus towards decriminalization of marijuana, which we will probably see hit the books in our lifetime.
