80s Thrash (Slayer, Exodus, TESTAMENT, Overkill, Metallica, Anthrax, Pantera, Annihilator, Megadeth, Death, Iced Earth) were the best years of metal in my opinion. Today you have shit bands like Atryeu and Avenged Sevenfold who say theyre metal when theyre actually "emo" or "metalcore". Thrash metal is about pure aggression and of course speed. I cant believe bands today that are so damn whiny and complain about theyre damn girlfriends leaving them. Notice that those kind of bands or only in America and most bands that are tagged with "core" are from America? Whats happened? American Thrash kicked ass and took names and then they got this whiny, Im gonna slit my wrist, music. Im not completely stubborn...I do enjoy the music of Lamb of God because of their insane rhythm section and pantera-esque like grooves. I love Children of Bodom's music because its raw and Alexi Laiho is great guitar player in my opinion. I even like a little black metal like Dimmu Borgir, Emperor, Immortal, DragonLord (because of Eric Peterson) and Behemoth (Not Cradle of Filth because they suck). Most of it is pretty evil. I know that sub-genres are stupid but i think its fun to classify a bands sound by a particualr genre. I like hearing others opinions on what genre they think a band is based on by what they here out of the band. Its interesting.

I always considered CoB power thrash, LoG are a bit too -core for me sometimes but I like them, CoF I used to consider gothic metal but now days seems more like gothic rock. and tool is just utter shit... literally, like listening to someone having a bit of explosive diarrhea in a public restroom. they belong somewhere between korn, disturbed, and stone sour.

Wow, what an interesting debate, I like all this except tool, which is a nu metal rip off of Rush's YYZ on moving pictures. The singer whines about being molested more than that linkin park guy and Tori Amos combined. And here in NC, the only people who like them are people who said they liked "heavy" music until At the Drive In got on a magazine cover, then Tool became "Art Rock", which is a catchall term for anything that can be on the cover of SPIN Magazine and pretend to be anti image while doing Oakley Sunglasses ads like that pretentious fag Maynard. Oooh, you paid 60-100 bucks to see us and I won't even face the crowd, because I'm so deep and mysterious, fuck tool and all of there emo kid fans who are listening to the lastest "Indie Postscream Nu-Twice Punk Once Removed Rockcore" genre that is re created every week so that people think that Avenged Sevenfold and and Vampire Weekend are "heavy".

It's all pretty obtuse, and some of it is damn near undefineable.
Children of Bodom is Melodic Death Metal.
Katatonia, all around, is Gothic - and Ambient, at that...
Cradle of Filth is Extreme Metal - only that much can be said without argument.
Lamb of God is NOT straight thrash metal - it lacks many of the common elements of thrash, and, while more straight forward than ultra articulate acts like Meshuggah and Opeth, LoG are more accomplished at their instruments and integrate more progressive techniques than say, Slayer.
Symphony X is Prog, and embodies elements of several different styles - something bands like Dream Theater pioneered. Michael Romeo is a Genius.
Type O Negative is Doom, no matter what anyone tells me!
Tool, while VERY heavy, can also be eclectic and ambient, similar to acts like King Crimson and Mister Bungle. I'd definitely say that they are more very Hard Rock than Heavy Metal.
Some of these comments, I might add, flirt the line of incoherency. If only the people who LISTENED to the music were as intelligent as the music itself....

I think the only lable you should put on bands like Lamb of God and Tool is "metle" There are so many different things you can call a band but in reality, if they are anygood, they dont give a shit about what they are. They just play there own music. Isnt that what metal is all about?

Cradle of Filth is both because think about it Symphonic Black Metal is softer than normal black metal but heavier than Gothic Metal and Extreme Gothic Metal is the same thing and yes Tool is metal
