metalero - 2008-07-29 11:19:42
hahah yeah metal is pretty gay, i love going to metal shows but theres minimal females in the crowd specially if its a local show, but if i go to a hardcore show or punk or new metal, this bands have all kinds of chicks following, anyway people are gonna be people... and people are stupid and closed minded, "if your not into metal you are not my friend" yeah emo kids wear make up and cry a lot its funny but thats not a reason to hate them. stop fucking racism that shit is wrong!
Crash - 2008-07-27 15:20:18
I thought the article was well written and has a good idea behind it, but i disagree with my chemical romance and panic at the disco being emo. First of all, they sound NOTHING alike, how can they be in the same music category? I think its funny how everyone insists on calling them emo when they have never said they were. They always say they are NOT emo, so why does everyone say they are?
I'm not emo, but i like my chemical romance. Panic isn't that great in my opinion, but hey, someone must like them or they wouldn't be famous.
I think the whole labeling crap is lame and should stop. Dress how you want, listen to what you want, but going around with a big label over your head is just a pathetic way of calling attention.
Back to the point of the article, the author is right. Some types of music are always blamed for shit they have no control over. I never heard anyone blaming Superman when that kid threw himself out of a window to see if he could fly after seeing a superman movie (yes, that happened). So why blame music? Just to blame someone, thats why.
People should just realize that maybe its nobodies fault... like the wise saying says... shit happens.
DBag123 - 2008-07-27 10:01:01
Honestly, i really dont care about emo. I dont like it because i hate how all the musicians do is whine in a really bitchy voice and complain about getting dumped or losing power in the house before they are finished using their hair straightener. But, if you like emo, i dont have a problem with that. I just hate it when emo people start bitching to me about how miserable they are because their parents wont give them money to buy more make up (this happens more than you think it would). The only real problem i have is when i am thrown in with the emo crowd. I have been a metal/punk/alt rock fan ever since i was 10, and now im almost 18. I wear shirts for bands like White Zombie, Anthrax, Operation Ivy, etc., and i also wear baggy jeans cause i like the extra room. I look nothing like an emo person yet most idiots tend to think that i am an emo. I dont understand why, but it just happens. I think thats why most metal fans tend to have a problem with emo, cause most metalheads i know have been told that they are emo and it really pisses them off.
Thrash Is Omega - 2008-07-26 20:57:35
Emo is NOT hetero...it literally is about as gay as gay can be. Metal is a very brutal style of music where as emo is very whiny. Bands like Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance should be ashamed of themselves. They are a true disgrace to the music community. Metal heads around the world should band together and wipe out the Emo Scum!!!
Bee - 2008-07-26 17:44:04
i wouldn't have a problem with emo or HXC kids, if they didn't have a problem with me. and by problem, i mean them coming to my shows shoving people out of the mosh pit so THEY CAN FIGHT AIR. and when we shove em around in pit-style fashion, they get all pissed off and try to start a fight. if it happened once in a while, i wouldn't care. but it happens at least 4 times at EVERY metal show i've been to in the last 2 years. it's a disrespect to us real metalheads, the bands playing, and most of all, it's an embarrassment on themselves. thus, my aggression towards wanting this fad to die.
WS2005 - 2008-07-26 15:51:00
This is a good article, then again I don't believe most of it, maybe in other cities around the US "Emos" don't brag about how their life sucks but when you live in the north side of chicago where are the rich yuppies live, and you have these little fags running around saying their life is so hard and listen to their My Chemical Romance. They don't know what a tough life is all about. Most of the emo kids I know of are just ignorant jackasses that don't know what their stanind up for, It's a fucking stupid phase and hopedully it will die out, that and Hardcore dancing. Hardcore dancing is fine and great for hardcore bands and on the east coast but come on. Your fucking hardcore dancing Demon Hunetr, As I Lay Dying or even Lamb of God at a Chicago venue??? That's just not fucking right.
My Vile Existence - 2008-07-26 13:35:18
WOW, Uhhhh.... I guess I'm a knuckle dragger. I should restate My case. Emo Singers sound like cry baby, bleeding heart, should be in boy band, pussy's.
EMO IS NOT METAL! Emo is Hardcore meets boy band, theres no place for it in metal.
- 2008-07-26 06:21:47
I'm not a fan of emo music, but i'm irritated that we have yet another stereotype used to make people hate each other. Just like metalheads are usually percieved and knuckledragging baffoons, "emo" kids are all percieved as weak and gay. i know emo kids that could kick anybody's ass, just like i know plenty of metalheads who are some of the smartest, well-educated people I know. It's all about how you yourself want to be percieved, not how anyone else tells you you should feel.
My Vile Existence - 2008-07-25 14:12:11
Emo isn't even worth the time spent or effort put forth. Emo is Hardcore with a mad dose of pussy,I'm not talking about the good to eat kind either. While were on the topic of pussy ass vocals, Axl Rose, please stay away from the Metal scene. Neither Emo or Axl are Metal.
WolfChild - 2008-07-25 14:09:56
I had no idea the Emo thing was so hated against, it's as bad as when I was in school and we were "metal" or "goth" and normal people made fun of us or hated us. I don't really like emo music and I am guilty of calling it gay but I don't mean it in a hateful way I just think the music is too soft for my taste. It actually wasn't that bad live when I was forced to go to with a sibling to a Panic at the Disco concert, maybe that was the vodka, but still I enjoyed it none the less.
That article got me thinking about when I was in middle school and the kids I befriended then. I never though about it before but we were very diverse in our musical tastes. I was a metal head who was into Metallica and Judas Priest, my friend Elizabeth was a hippie type who liked classic rock, my friend Derek was into death/black metal and my friend Melody was so Goth it hurt. I never realized that we were all different until reading this article. I think that's the way it should be at all school and in life, all the weirdo's need to ban together.
God sometimes metal head guys can be as bad as Jocks when it comes to certain things. Anything that's slightly feminine is hated upon, the same way most girls who like metal aren't taken seriously in the media. Like that dude who called Colette a “coke whore”, it's like just because you're a girl that makes it okay to say those things but if you were a dude it's not like that. What the fuck, we're not in the 1700's anymore. And I'm sorry but most metal shows are very homoerotic, nothing but big sweaty dudes "moshing" with each other. Yeah it's out of aggression but how easily does an argument turn in to fucking between men and women? I rest my case. Maybe that's why metal dudes have such a problem with emo guys femininity, because maybe they're kind of attracted to the emo guys secretly and a lot of those macho metal head guys are trapped in the closet much like the jocks are.
steiner666 - 2008-07-25 11:24:39
I hate emos just as much as I hate anyone else that sells out to a particular fad/group/fashion. I don't enjoy the music, the vocals just sound like crybaby teens, i've never heard anything impressive music (instrument)wise.
Do people have the right to be different? yes. but there's nothing different or unique about part of such a large fad though. I listen to death metal and black metal, but I don't go around wearing corpse paint and spikey armor, usually just band t-shirts and comfortable pants. If you're on stage performing or someshit, sure, wear whatever makeup and crazy clothes you want, but that's just being in-character.
I think what I hate most about the whole emo thing is just how samey they all look and how much obvious extra effort they put into their daily dress to fit in with their emo friends or get attention or whatever the hell it is that they're doing. I hated the glam metal fad just as much. It's god damn MUSIC its about your auditory senses, not some visual fashion show.
emometal - 2008-07-25 09:59:31
I'm essentially a 17 yo emo kid. I wear "guyliner" on a near daily basis, among other makeup. No, I don't wear my jeans wayyy too tight and yes, I am gay. One of my favorite bands is MCR and the song Cancer made me cry. I own all their albums. I also own every single Judas Priest album and most of the Ozzy and Sabbath albums. I love Queen (not metal, but I had to say it) and Zep and shit like that too. People fail to realize that most emos also listen to metal and classic rock. And alot of emo artists get their influence from metal and classic rock. I mean, I'm an emo singer, and alot of the stuff I sing sounds like MCR, but alot of it sounds alot like Priest or Sabbath, and alot of it sounds pretty dark and deep like Dimmu or ArchEnemy. Emo, remember, isn't much of a new movement. It started in the 80s and dwindled in the 90s but was recently reborn. It was around in the height of metal and rock and it built off of that. Also, I love how everyone relates emos to gays and likes to make homophobic jokes about both of them. Don't you realize that some of the greatest figures in rock and metal were gay. Think Rob Halford of Priest, Freddie Mercury of Queen, David Bowie, Ozzy (I'm like 99.999% sure he's bi), Kurt Cobain (bi), and David Geffen (owner of Geffen Records). Plus look at the outfits alot of metalheads wear: leather-covered bodies embroidered with silver, looking like a bdsm gay porn, or the borderline-transsexual glam look of the 80s, or Manowar. Hell even alot of corpse paint look is inspired by opera and kabuki theater...that sounds pretty gay to me. The metal community has no right, in my eyes, to be homophobic or hateful to emos, not only for their respective shares of struggles, but for the fact that metal really isn't much different from it all, even in music (trust me I listen to alot of both and they aren't as different as everyone says they are).
Daniel - 2008-07-25 09:41:00
the deal with emo music is that people dont take the time to listen to it... they just look at emo kids who are usually depressed. Emo music es cool with me, i got nothing against it, the problem is that is becoming a new trend and those trendy songs talk about stuff that emo kids take to seriously. i think that's the problem
Ad if you dont like it you can pass a blunt to the nigger on the left!
ColetteClaire - 2008-07-25 08:43:41
Hell yes Jason!! I was just at the Dimmu Borgir show the other day and noticed that there was no line for the womens bathroom. Think about any large event you've been to, a baseball game or some such thing, you always see an insane line for the women's bathroom. And to top it all off, there WAS a line for the mens bathroom, and again, at most events this is not the case. I was shocked. That had to mean that only like 10% of the audience was female. Then I started noticing this at other shows too. Remember the 80's when really hot models and chicks that looked like Kelly Bundy on Married With Children liked metal? Granted alot of it was hiar metal, but not all of it. What happed? When did metal turn into a sausage fest? Graveytrain I think said it best with "The reason there are more women at emo concerts than metal concerts does not mean that emo guys are more hetero. On the contrary, it shows how they are more feminine and like more feminine things in life." Ok tell me what exactly is gay about enjoying feminine things if your hetero? You like women right? You enjoy their company and the way they smell? Isn't that being into feminine things? I was shocked again several days later when I went on a fan site for a band I had interviewed for The Gauntlet and read some really negative comments. There were positive comments about my interview too and you can't please all the people all the time, but what shocked me was the misogyny (Gravytrain may have to look that up) of the negative stuff. One guy called me a "stupid bitch" another said I was a "coke whore". I looked up some metal interviews doen by men on that site and saw that the negative comments described the guy as " a dork". "Coke whore" is a little harsher than dork and why did my gender influence the way I was insulted anyway? I think metal fans need to reexamine what makes the music great. Individuality, stregth, and creativity fuel metal. Not hatred of your mommy. If we get back to what made metal great in the first place we would see that discrimination of emos, or women is not at all what its about. Obviously its not all bad. Bands like Arch Enemy and Lacuna Coil have female members and are are well liked by many metal fans, and of course, there are more female audience at their shows. But it shouldn't take a female member of the band to make women fell accepted at the show, this should happen reguardless of the gender of the band. This is the fans, not the bands, that need to realzie what brought them to the show in the first place.

emo is totally totally for fags

"Fans of metal, emo, and goth should unite and let the press and government know we won't stand for being labeled as scapegoats."
I agree 100% with that, and that we need to drop any assumptions and fight for the sake of self expression and music. I dont like lables like 'goth' and 'emo' and what not, I see people as people. Alot of these comments are immiture too!
I'm into all kinds of music but i hope no never see the day that im not allowed to listen to even just 1 band.
Great article, very imformative!

Gravytrain: Metal doesn't just have corpsepaint, metal also had glam with teased hair, tight leotards, and outrageous makeup. Black metal and glam aren't the only genres in metal with makeup. Go backstage at almost any show and you'll see a makeup kit.
thedevilsfavouriteson - 2008-07-25 04:42:42
i think the general mass of comments about this is ridiculous.i think gravy trains comment covering the 'gay' aspect was ridiculous swill.surely to say you hate someone because of how they look is narrowminded bigoted and touches on things like racism aswell.to say you hate someone because of the music they like is also ridiculous and narrowminded.im sure all metal/rock/alternative/punk fans have been the victims of said persecution before, getting harassed called names picked fights with mearly on the basis of how you look and what music you listen.for this then to carry on through alternative culture baffles me,just cause i dont like my chemical romance doesnt mean i wont be friends with someone cause they like them.just cause i dont dress like an emo kid or dont have huge spikes down my arm or dress like a metal guy doesnt mean i cant be friends with them.you cant judge someone on thier clothes or the musical taste surely its the person thats matters.
surely at some point anyone who listens to anything but mainstream music theyve went theres bound to me something better than this something else and theyve found whatever respective genre of music and then along with that comes an understanding of another culture which you then learn that just cause you like doesnt mean everyone else will.surely everyone has been in a conversation with a more 'typical' person "whats all that mad shit you listen to?..look at all your mad clothes like...stupid fucking hippy"
to this day i still get asked questions like this and i dont dress in a way that would attract attention.and to this day i still try and explain the music and the clothes..even to point were ive tried to explain why i dress my 9month yr old son in the way i dress him.."why dont you dress him in normal clothes.."
well i dont nessecarily think whats 'normal' is nessecarily the right way. and if he grows up and wants to wear fucking tracksuits or dresses or whatever ill et him do it cause thats the person he wants to be. let people be whatever they wanna be surely part of being alternative is being more open minded. to be honest the vast majority of comments make you guys come across as meat heads.
if the tabloid papers and media in general are latching on to emo=suicide then they should realise the office workers kill themselves homelss people kill themselves politicians kill them selves house wives kill themselves the list goes on.theres no one common denominator that would lead people to go to that exterme.its a complex problem. to 'outlaw' emo would meaning having to outlaw almost every aspect of society.
i now have a mental image of 'emo kids' riding round in the wild west with six shooters and stetsons with bandana print.
fuckthehaters - 2008-07-25 04:14:48
MCR and PATD are not emo. I don't know why people suicide after listening to metal music. I never care about the lyrics of metal music. They will kill me later...
Lurch - 2008-07-25 02:51:03
Ive tried to get along with emo guys/girls but they always tell me to fuck off when i tell them the kind of music i like.
Sammy V - 2008-07-25 00:03:47
You know, I'm just a 16 year old kid...one day I'll be 30 years old. Then no one is gonna give a fuck about my Obituary CDs, because I'M 30. But can you REALLY see an EMO KID at 30 crying and listening to MCR and writing poetry? So which sounds better? Awkward teenage lameness for life, songs about awkward teenage life, no solos and shit? or. Good fucking music with technique, strong vocals (br00tal, Opratic, BM etc. ), and in the case of some bands meaningful lyrics that can be applied to any group of people at any time? yeah...it should be clear. Anyway...I can't believe you're gonna leave the poor little scenekids all alone ;D
Graveytrain - 2008-07-24 23:17:27
This author finds emo to be more heterosexual than metal. Considering the makeup and eye shadow emo guys wear I would desagree. Yes many metal fans where corpsepaint, but that is about as far from wearing the eye shadow that emo guys wear as one can get. Emo is being beaten down because the whole look for guys is simply ridiculous.
Corpsepaint isn't any better looking really, in fact its just as ridiculous looking. But the difference is that emo guys where their makeup to look pwitty, whereas corpsepaint is all about looking hellish and showing your support for your favorite black metal band in an over the top way.
The reason there are more women at emo concerts than metal concerts does not mean that emo guys are more hetero. On the contrary, it shows how they are more feminine and like more feminine things in life. Go to a gay dance at your local liberal college, you will find tons of women at them. But that doesn't mean the men there are anymore heterosexual.
Overall I know plenty of homosexuals who love metal so the entire argument is stupid. But at the same time I hate emo guys cause they look stupid, they like greatly inferior music, and they act more like fags than all my homosexual friends from college.
And don't ever say that metal fans should embrace emo. We will be more likely to embrace the "Carebears" as our formal mascot than ever give emo guys a chance. Emo women, sure they are hot as fuck. But emo guys are just little wannabe girly homosexuals who truly need to get over themselves and stop being full of self pity.
kristychomp - 2008-07-24 22:20:43
I agree with this article, who cares what kind of music you listen to. Metal and emo fans are both discriminated against.
vomitgod - 2008-07-24 22:18:21
emolove - you totally missed the point of the article. This article is basically saying emo is going through what metal went through 20 years ago and that metal fans should be more emphatic towards emo fans. Jason gets no credit for looking at things from a different point of view. If you read his articles on The gauntlet, he pokes fun at a lot of people to get people thinking. This was an article of tolerance if anything. Look at the last line he wrote so eloquently.
Shelby Criswell - 2008-07-24 22:12:14
I don't get why most people label each other stupid names like "emo kids" or "metalheads" or whatever just because the way they dress and the music they listen to. Music is music and if you like a certain genre, then just mind your own business and listen to the kind you like.
emolove - 2008-07-24 22:05:42

i can't stand it one bit. i hope the whole emo scene will eventually die.
emo - 2008-07-24 20:15:02
emo isnt what everybody thinks it is. thats the sad part that it gets a bad rep because people dont understand it. emo is about being yourself and loving your music. music is used as theapy. the cry ing and cutting is a mental thing and could happen to anybody, whether they are emo or not.
why exactly does everybody hate emo in the first place? im sure alot of people on this site have had problems, or thoughts of suicide or whatever. As fans of music, and as people who want to be differwent from society and love their music, you shouldnt descriminate against people who want to do the same.
really great article, i sent the link to all my friends.
