Eclectic avant-garde thrash and prog metal that takes the listener on a crazy trip through varied musical ebbs and flows is the order of the day on Atrox's 'Orgasm'. Their brand of progressive metal is a bizarre combination of Thought Industry, Rush and Metallica which is capped off on this record by the colorful soprano vocals of Monika (also of Tactile Gemma). 'Methods Of Survival' contains a headbanging riff that will have you shaking your head along with it's incessant, driving beat. The off time percussion provided by drummer Tor-Arne Helgesen is quite left of center, his inspired beats slamming away with a whirlwind of jazzy, progressive strikes. Monika's voice at times approaches that of a coloratura soprano, or what is best described as a true soprano when she hits the piercing notes in the high part of her vocal range. 'Heartquake' is much mellower, as Monika takes a softer approach with her voice and the band provides instrumentation in an odd time signature. On the buzzing 'Burning Bridges' the band takes a straightforward thrash metal approach during the introduction, moving into a Dream Theater style riff that makes for a meaty backdrop to Monika's soaring vox. 'Tentacles' finds the group moving between experimental thrash and jazz rock with ease. Atrox are a group that are really doing something that is a lot different and the unique vocal approach really stands out the singer smoothly croons during this track 'What's the great thing about being unique anyway…We all are'. For fans of a musical style the great thing is that Atrox have managed to put together a compelling album that is full of refreshing musical concepts that are performed in a manner that makes for an engaging listen over and over again. Definitely different, more so than many artists attempting this style, 'Orgasm' is an interesting and highly entertaining listen you're sure to enjoy if you consider yourself to be a metal fan with an open mind.
