This Greek quintet are adept at playing power metal with an original twist, highlighted by the skilled vocal performance of Michael Choulakis. The singer has a dark timbre which resonates forcefully on epic showpieces like the brooding 'Come Into My Nightmare' and driving thrash of 'Flight To The Unknown', where his approach is particularly effective. The key work of Mary Tassouli is a distant accompaniment which gives the band's compositions an extremely full sound, without being so loud as to overshadow the crunching guitars of Elias Koskoris. On 'Desperate Act', Koskoris shows off his considerable lead talents, ripping through blazing sweeps and arpeggios designed to set his fretboard aflame. The rhythm guitars are very compressed and gated, leading to a crisp, tight tone on the title track, 'Sivilla.' Dark Nova put forth a thundering effort on the majestic natured 'In A Crevice Of Time.' On this track, Choulakis sounds much doomier than your average power metal singer and Koskoris chimes in with a smooth sounding nylon stringed acoustic passage. This song is arranged wonderfully, paying heed to dramatic effect and overcoming the monotonous patterning that so many power metal acts fall prey to. Although some metalhead's palettes aren't refined enough to take a dose of Eurometal this jarringly effective, many well listened aficionados will rejoice at the artistic thought and talent which Dark Nova have to offer. Koskoris is without question among the best of the European axe-wielders, consistently delivering shredding solos over the course of the album that are furious, yet tasteful. For those bored with the paint by numbers power metal inundating the scene these days, 'Sivilla' is a refreshing respite from the course of regular business. Keep your eye on this band to be one of the giants of the Eurometal scene.
