A certain maturity is present in the digits of 'A Different Kind Of Pain', as Cold end up with an album that is as memorable as any released in 2005. Scooter Ward remains the driving force behind the band's vast melodies and poignant, well-learned songwriting.

Ultimately, this record sees the band moving toward more of a pure rock sound than they exhibited on 'Year Of The Spider.' Gone are the Nu Metal references the band previously exhibited on tracks like 'Stupid Girl' in favor of a direction more similar to that of Staind. Solid rock structures, plenty of melody and ear-catching refrains are the standard on this new album, from the soaring 'Anatomy Of A Tidal Wave' to the vibrant harmony that is prevalent in 'Feel It In Your Heart', Cold succeed like few other bands in rock can and they do so with a seasoned grace.

Ward has developed as both a songwriter and a performer, with his moody presence bearing a tremendous amount of weight throughout the powerfully emotive 'Back Home.' Meanwhile, the somber, stormy sounds that usher in the title track further set the mood for the record, as Ward pulls off his most convincing performance of the entire record.

For those followers that are seeking the band's Nu Metal roots, you may well be disappointed if that's all you're looking for. Cold has assuredly evolved from their prior leanings, but the sounds listeners will find here will be a logical progression in the minds of a great many fans. In the end, 'A Different Kind Of Pain' is a wholly convincing example of quality rock music that resounds as a extraordinarily adept progression in the musical career of a band that has placed themselves amongst the best in their field. If you are a lover of modern rock music, you simply owe it to yourself to give this album a listen.
