Calvarium are yet another ensemble sworn to black, spewing forth demonic invocations laced with hatred and distempered abhorrence. Following an introduction entitled 'Three Nails And The Hammer Of Satan', that is designed to set an ambience of triumphant despair, the band launches immediately into 'Horns Of Hate'. Instantly it is noticeable that Calvarium are geared musically toward the harshest sounds imaginable, an inclination which shines through in the group's performance. Their lyrics are centered in the occult, while the bands sound is raw, abrasive and grim without question. Calvarium uses sparse keyboards to enhance the atmospheric qualities of their music on 'Jumalviha' as the vocals are spat with the venom of a deadly serpent. Other efforts here that are especially notable include the wickedly black 'Morbid Hordes Revenge' and the blasting, ravaging 'Death Worship', where the band uses a chaotic stop action section to break up the incessant thunder. Yet another blood sacrifice for the legions of darkness, 'The Skull Of Golgotha' succeeds in its quest for the manifestation of the sonic hordes.

Prior to launching his solo career in the mid-80’s, guitarist Joe Satriani taught guitar. His pupils included Steve Vai, Metallica’s Kirk Hammett, Primus’ Larry LaLonde, and jazz player Charlie Hunter, among others.
