Freedom Call have once again released a very solid power metal album. These five guys from Germany deliver twelve melodic, energetic, and downright fun tracks with this effort. Vocalist Chris Bay sings in a high, sometimes operatic voice, along the lines of Tobias Samnet and Fabio Lione. The guitar work, done by Bay and Cede Dupont, isn't anything spectacular, just the typical power metal chords with some good solos – especially on 'The Eternal Flame.' But if you're a big power metal fan then there isn't much more to ask for. Bassist Ilker Ersin usually plays at the nice fast pace also typical of the genre. Dan Zimmermann, the band's drummer, could be the next Jörg Michael. He displays the same versatility and consistency that sets Jörg apart from other power metal drummers who are often very bland. The Circle of Life's strongest point is the keyboards as Nils Neuman does an excellent job at both creating melodies and establishing atmosphere. His approach brings to mind that of Stratovarius' Jens Johansson. On 'Kings & Queens' he is really able to show off his skill. The album's best song, however, is 'Hero Nation.' Every aspect of their music comes together wonderfully in this song, which starts off with a couple of slow verses, followed by choirs, and culminating with an inspriring, upbeat chorus. This album probably isn't for everyone – non-power metal fans might find it too cheerful, or even a little cheesy. But this album would be a standout addition to any power metal fan's collection.
