England's Ramesses forms a wicked dirge which is bleak, buzzing and thouroughly dismal through four brooding tracks of blackened doom here on their latest, 'We Will Lead You To Glorious Times'. If you want to compare the band to stoner metal, then Ramesses is certainly the crippler. The Black Sabbath inspired styling of 'Master Your Demons' evokes a lost, distant feeling which leaves the listener deep inside a bottomless void with it's verbed out delays and sludgy guitar belches.
At certain points, the production is a bit shallow sounding, but this type of recording actually suits the band quite well. The drum intro of 'Ramesses II' could stand to be triggered in order to make it more powerful, however, it's obvious the band was striving for more of a low-fi production to begin with, so these minor factors are not of major concern. The swirling vocals of Adam Richardson gives the track a demented feel, while the wahed out solo of Tim Bagshaw adds psychadelic substance to the jam's trippy vibe.
Sometimes, the music is similar to early, 'Streetcleaner' era Godflesh, with its potently droning manner. The eleven minute epic 'Black Domina' initiates with a dreamy vibe before driving into some stocky riffing with dark, menacing vox. You'll get lost in the vastness of this track, it's wide open sound is comparable to Kyuss as the detuned guitar vibrations loom enormously in the background while Richardson chants 'Step into the white light'.
All in all, Ramesses offer up a more than substantial offering of spaced out doom metal on 'We Will Lead You To Glorious Times'. Spark oneup and go to Hell with them, dig?
