One part Zombie, One part Manson and one part Ed Wood, former Murderdolls frontman Wednesday 13 returns with record filled with double entedres, snotty attitude and a general evil spookiness. When it boils right down to it, this stuff sounds like if Poison had listened to Rob Zombie records while they were growing up. This is a band with a strong visual appearance it will be interesting to see what the videos will turn out looking like. This group is darker in thematic matter than the Murderdolls, but the music is a bit punkier and less metal than that now marred supergroup.
There's singable material here like 'I Walked With A Zombie', an upbeat, dirty sounding track that takes on a polished Misfits feel. 'Bad Things' hits Skid Row territory, a loud rocking anthem that is catchy and sticks pretty close to eighties metal territory. Simple, easy to remember lyrics add to the coolness factor here, this material should we well received in the live arena. The record features a cool, creepy cover and the whole package is pretty well put together. 'House By The Cemetary' pretty much rocks. On 'God Is A Lie', 13 does a pretty good Taime Downe.
You'll nod your head along in a zombified state to 'Elect Death For President', which has a sleazy, Alice Cooper feel that just plain sounds mean. The band pulls off some slick b movie shock with the deep and dark 'Rot For Me'. 'The Ghost Of Vincent Price' is an ode to one of the scariest guys that ever walked the face of the planet and lets you know exactly where this band's heads are at. On the whole this is a good album is you enjoy sing along, punky sounding pop metal. It might not cut it if you're only into the really heavy shit, but there's no denying this album rocks like a mutha and should do very well, especially with fans that are a little older and can appreciate the roots that spawned this freakish Frankenstein.
