If the world wasn't sure they had enough Wednesday 13 in 2005 with 'Transylvania: 90210', he's back in 2006 with 'Fang Bang', a new album full of campy horror punk/metal antics. When you first listen to Wednesday 13 you have to wonder if it's all just a joke or real music. Ultimately, it is equal parts of both. Wednesday himself has said the only thing he takes seriously is not being serious. This remains true for his second solo album 'Fang Bang' with song titles like 'Morgue Than Words' 'Happily Ever Cadaver' and 'My Home Sweet Homicide' Wednesday is clearly not going to take things seriously any time soon.
When I first heard about Wednesday releasing a solo album I was skeptical about how much effort might actually be put into the songs. The single from 'Transylvania' 'I walked with a Zombie' didn't strike me as real complicated song writing. Then I heard the album and was impressed with how it fun was without being too stupid. 'Fang Bang' continues in this vein but is even better musically. It heads into a slightly less punk and more metal direction which ends up sounding a lot like LA Guns meets Alice Cooper. Like the song 'Happily Ever Cadaver' which has a misfit's like bass line with that fast strumming glam guitar and then a very punk 'oy' toward the end.
Most of the songs are about funny B-horror movie inspired themes with a bit of sex and drugs mixed in. Though one song 'Curse of Me' stuck in my mind, musically it is actually really good; the chorus has some pretty good lead guitar and a semi-melodic hook and the words are genuinely creepy instead of campy funny creepy. 'Something's are worth dying for and baby that ain't me: I'm sorry that you couldn't escape this Curse of me.' That song was my personal favorite on the album. My second favorite was 'Too Much Blood' which almost has a southern rock flavor and is pretty heavy. Of Course 'Till Death Do Us Party' definitely deserves a mention here since it is quintessential Wednesday and it is just damn fun.
Growing up on glam rock I can't help but have a soft spot for music like Wednesday 13's. Music that doesn't deal with your issues and instead kicks you in the face and hands you a beer. This is party music for the kid with a sick sense of humor. Raunchy, fast, fun, catchy tunes that remind us of the pre-grunge days of limos with Jacuzzis in them cursing down Sunset Blvd. Anyone who listens to metal that can tear themselves away from progressive metalcore virtuosity for a minuet and remember that they have a sense of humor should put on their black eye liner and leather pants and go buy this album.
