Tears From The Sky have an extremely original metal sound that really can't be nailed down. The vocals of Jean-Sebastian Racine have a distinct sound that makes the band sound completely unique. Guitar-wise, you'll hear some of the most ass kickin' metal riffs this side of Randy Rhodes. The album kicks off with a bang with the driving, strong-armed title track 'Power Symbol'. TFTS really concentrates on rocking things out, but they don't utilize much thrash influence such as many of the groups hitting the scene right now. Instead, things here sound more like a souped up rock fest which is amped up by Racine's aggro vox. 'Nailed Down' is really catchy and contains some superb guitar melodies. The sound of 'Under The Mask' is up-tempo at times, at other times the song delivers some slamming mid paced mosh beats that really hit home with sheer force.
The frantic, spider fingered fretwork of 'The Next Few Days' proves that this band can really tear into some complicated, technical stuff. The song features some brilliant dynamics, including a couple of breakdown verse sections that brings everything into focus. You'll be impressed by the tight, bottom heavy rhythms of 'Angel's Dance' where Racine takes on an almost black metal style of singing at times that sounds quite dastardly. The MCD closes out with the Maiden influenced 'As One 'Till The End', which features bold hardcore chants and more cool vocal effects by Racine and a shitload of guest vocalists that are seriously too numerous to mention, most of whom are cheering and freaking out at the end of the tune. All in all, this is an exceptionally great track that captures the essence of the band.
Although this MCD is short, it certainly leaves the listener wanting to hear much more of this fantastic band of Canucks. Tears From The Sky inject a breath of fresh air into the metal scene. Watch for this band to definitely go places with this one!
