The music on 'The Pale Haunt Departure' encompasses several different atmospheres, from thick rumblings to enormous vast soundscapes. The band employs clean guitar techniques that are uncharacteristic and welcome and as their name implies, the group harbors a doom influence that permeates the record, but the death style vocals prevent this from being a true doom album in the purest sense. Instead, listeners can look forward to an enjoyable conjoining of extreme styles designed for maximum ambient impact. Novembers Doom is at their best when they do walk the doomish path however, 'Autumn Reflection' is a haunting piece that is rich with dramatic nuances. This song is deeply emotional and impacts the listener with its atypical message of love. 'In The Absence Of Grace' is a return to the melding of the doom and death styles which in turn becomes a tremendous wave of dark emotion that reaches into the utter depths of human despair. 'Through A Child's Eyes' is a superb lyrical concept that features vocal harmonies that are similar to early Pink Floyd only these vocal mutterings have felt the cold touch of the hand of doom. This record will certainly appeal to any fan of atmospheric death metal or doom, however much of the musical content is melodic, so be forewarned. You'll find very few blasts of death here, just the occasional deathly vocal. But for those who can appreciate melodies touched with a sense of despair, look no further.
