Less of a gamble than many soundtrack records, the heart of this record resides in the attention given to emerging artists. The biggest surprise of the soundtrack is a half-hearted 'Washing Away Me In The Tides' by Trivium. It's easy to see why this track was left off of the original version of the band's stellar 'Ascendancy' album. It just doesn't measure up as a Trivium song and furthermore, is not very representative of what we can expect to hear on the group's next record (which is to be delivered later in the year.) Rare tracks always add value to an album, however and the worst Trivium song is still easily better than the best from many groups. Interestingly enough, Lacuna Coil return with a fantastic track from the band's forthcoming 'Karmacode' album, 'Our Truth.' In a word, this group is amazing. Excellent production, catchy songwriting and the oh-so-alluring voice of Christina Scabbia ensure that Lacuna Coil will be one of the breakout bands of 2006 and this cut will easily top many radio playlists in anticipation of the new record's release.

Slipknot fans will be treated to a new mix of 'Vermillion Pt 2' and while their turn from aggressive metal sounds to 'Silent Lucidity'-style ballads more indicative of singer Corey Taylor's other band, Stone Sour could be considered to be the biggest sellout move in the history of heavy metal, the music is still damn good. Taylor has an excellent voice for doing this type of material and the song's relationship-oriented theme will connect with the kids who are more liable to pick this one up for hot remixes by teen faves Hawthorne Heights and My Chemical Romance.

Surprises include strong showings by relative newcomers Gosling, Pusifer and Mendoza and Cradle Of Filth continue to distance themselves from their black metal heritage with a very astute cover of Glenn Danzig's 'Halloween 2.' Aiden receives a sonic facelift with an industrialized 'The Last Sunrise', sounding eerily similar to a teenage Nine Inch Nails.

Making a judgment call as to whether you enjoy a majority of these artists should be a deciding factor in purchasing this record. If you consider yourself a fan of a majority of these artists, you'll likely feel as though you have gotten your money's worth out of this dark, new age aural spectacle. Additionally, if you're seeking to expose yourself to some exciting new artists, this record is a great place to get started.

Cradle of Filth were never a Black Metal band, they may have connection to Satan in they're song, but that's only a few, isn't it? Dani Filth isn't a satanist. Henceforth proving that it isn't and never was a Black Metal band, learn your facts next time.
