Boasting thirty tracks of music and including some of the most important artists in today's music scene, the soundtrack to Showtime's upcoming Masters Of Horror thriller series is filled with enough good tracks from a wide enough variety of artists to cross over between a wide range of audiences. Fans of metal will be most impressed with performances here by Mudvayne, Buckethead featuring Serj Tankian, Bloodsimple, Mastadon, Shadows Fall and In Flames, with each group turning in tracks that would be considered as being as good as anything the bands have recently produced.
It boggles the mind as to why compilers of such soundtracks tend to draw from such a wide variety of artists. Mastodon fans are rather unlikely to enjoy Bear Vs. Shark and Armor For Sleep are dissimilar enough from Bloodsimple to argue that the two bands really don't belong on the same album together. A great many fans do not wish to listen to fifteen bands that aren't their style in order to hear fifteen bands they enjoy. It's albums like this that give you a little pity for those downloaders who seek out the tracks from their favorite band, mostly because they do not wish to pay for things that they do not want to hear.
Rise Against surprises with a very good showing in up-tempo, punky 'Obstructed', while Andrew W.K. furthers his slick marriage of the sounds of Billy Joel and Guns N' Roses on 'You Will Remember Tonight.'Particularly of note is Shadows Fall's thrashy, combustible 'This Is My Own.' The group is quite focused here and their sound continues to evolve into something that is remarkably singular. This song is one of the most important reasons for metal fans to buy this record.
Superb artwork graces this digipack, its cross shaped design and shadowy visuals being both intense and eye-catching. With the issue of the selection of artists as being a bit too diverse as the only major complaint, there's much more here to like than dislike about the compilation, making this soundtrack a good choice for metal fans who are a bit more adventurous in terms of their overall musical tastes.
