There is not a word available which properly describes the eclectic nature of Thought Industry, the spaced-out Kalamazoo sages who manage to combine everything from thrash metal to trip folk as easy as pie. This collection represents curiosities throughout the course of the band's Metal Blade career, even going so far as to include a ripping track from the group's 'High School Dance' demo, Thought Industry.
Being one of the first bands to ever combine extreme metal stylization with varied types of music in order to broaden their musical canvass, Thought Industry show here that their musical scope is ever-widening, a drunken rendition of Gary Numan's 'Metal' being a sharp curve thrown into an already diverse array of sonic flavors. Fans are treated to two separate renditions of 'Love Is America Spelled Backwards', the track from 'Outer Space Is Just A Martini Away' appearing in live and remixed forms. Two outtakes from the 'Outer Space' sessions appear here, the dreamy, fluffy 'Get Up And Slumber' and the equally trippy 'Louisiana.' Those who appreciate the heavier side of the group will no doubt enjoy the very Rush-like 'Encounter With A Hick', a track that passes between intentionally bizarre time signatures, originally meant for the 'Mods Carve The Pig: Assassins, Toads and God's Flesh' album.
It is unfortunate that many of the tracks that were intended for proper albums are of a lighter nature than the majority of their pre-'Black Balloon' material; however live renditions of Thought Industry staples the oozing 'Gelatin', the stomping yet surrealistic 'Cornerstone' and quirky 'Republicans In Love.' Those fans who have followed the band's music since it's inception will no doubt revel in 'Final Ballet' from the group's 'High School Dance' demo. This is Thought Industry at their most thrashing, giving the listener cues as to the bands thrash metal origins as Desecrator. 'Ballet' is actually the original version of 'Ballerina', which was reworked for the group's magnificent 'Songs For Insects' album. This record is something of the commemoration of a group that has gone completely over the edge.
At times, Oberlin and his entourage can become a bit pretentious, but if musical adventure is your preference, then this collection has more than enough artistic inventiveness for your dollar.
