For the metal scene to lose a band as creative, skilled and influential as the mighty Emperor seemed a tremendous blow, but with the band members freed up to work on other projects such as Zyklon and Carpathian Forest, fans have been given in all actuality even more great music than before. This continues with the release of 'Altered Genesis' by Blood Red Throne. You can hear a whole lot of old school death metal influence on Tchort's latest project. This record comes off just as well as the classic death metal albums that made Earache Records a force within the industry and 'Altered Genesis' stands tall beside previous label releases such as Morbid Angel's 'Blessed Are The Sick' and 'Left Hand Path' from Entombed. Blood Red Throne play with an intensity and conviction which many of their peers seem to lack. As the group tears through testaments to vehemence such as the crushing lead-off track 'Death To Birth' and 'Tortured Soul Appearance' they recapture the feeling that made death metal cool in the first place. Slithering between razor sharp axe work and blunt, forceful strikes as the rhythm section blasts away seems to be second nature to the ensemble.

'Eye-Licker' offers some cool triplets at the onset that are injected with an aura of severe brutality. The band seems to enjoy the type of riffs that slide around, forming power chords that result in maximum sonic butchery. Tchort's playing is precise and wicked as he leads the group through 'Flesh To Destroy'. The one downfall to the record is the noticeable lack of guitar solos. Some distorted melodies and squeals would liven the material up somewhat, however the strict attention to blinding rhythms does create an impression of power. Blood Red Throne's 'Altered Genesis' is one of the greatest death metal albums to come along in a very long time, re-igniting the spark that once burned in this genre that seemed as if it had no place left to go. After thrashing along to this album's smashing twelve tracks, a neck brace is mandatory. Death heads that buy this one will be certain to agree…
