Sentenced feel that the making of this record serves as a fitting epitaph for the band's career. Quite well, for they should, as this collection of stylistically diverse cuts puts an exclamation point on a career that has seen varying stages of musical styles, culminating here in this progressively tinged swan song, 'The Funeral Album'. This group has no shortage creative musical ideas and certainly the diversity of technique to pull off such a fitting exit. If the band is to be remembered in the annals of metal history, it should be known that this is their finest effort. 'Despair-Ridden Hearts' is the closest the group has ever come to writing a song that could be considered to be truly commercial, while the cold, far away, Gothenburgesque musical sound of 'Ever-Frost' rings as a forward thrusting metal ride that features a melodic approach from Ville Laihiala, the band's vocalist. An industrial flavored breakdown in this track deepens the dynamic and brings an enlightened resonance to the track's final chorus. 'We Are But Falling Leaves' is a melancholy piece that contains shimmering guitar licks and heartfelt vocals that praise the passing. A foray into melodic power metal, 'Consider Us Dead' breaks down for a brooding verse before moving into a strong chorus that is quite memorable. Throughout this record, you will find Sentenced succeeding in creating what is no doubt, the most accomplished album they've ever written. What a fitting way to remember this diversely talented, highly essential ensemble.
