With each successive release, Chevelle continue to expand the boundaries of hard music with thoughtful melodies, jarring rhythms and impressively skilled arrangements that reflect the three Loeffler brothers' unique chemistry as a focused musical unit. Chevelle have developed a songwriting sense which shows a large amount of depth and maturity. On 'This Type Of Thinking (Could Do Us In), they expand upon their highly successful 'Wonder What's Next' release with an album that is jam packed full of well composed tracks when taken as a whole, make for what is quite likely one of the most explosive and well put together commercial hard music records of 2004.

The record gets started with a bang with the slinking, bottom heavy track "The Clincher" which is dramatically emphasized by the smooth vocalizations of singer/guitarist Pete. Instantly memorable and packing a massive emotional impact, this song builds into a torrent of slamming power and is highlighted by it's wonderfully singable chorus. 'Get Some' builds upon themes previously explored on the group's last album. Even though this track is slick and fairly commercial, you can hear inspiration from bands such as Metallica in the tracks riffing and Pete's vocals range from soft crooning to aggressive, angry shouting as his brothers lay down a deep groove that is sure to get fists in the air in the concert arena.

By this point, 'Vitamin R (Leading Us Along)' has dominated rock radio for some time. Pete's anguished, venting singing here is some of his greatest on the record. This is a track that will be heard over the airwaves for a very, very long time to come. The band nestles into a dirty, urgent sounding groove on 'Still Running', following that song with the time signature jumping 'Breach Birth', a song that features soaring vocals and a thick rhythm track. Sam kicks in a fantastic performance, emphasizing the singing with accents that are highly creative and executed with sheer determination.

'Panic Prone' gives insight into the softer side of the group, its lush acoustic melody providing an excellent complement to Pete's telephonic transmissions. The forward thrusting 'Another Know It All' gets the tempo kicked back up a notch, displaying an aggressive chorus that grabs the listener with its weighty force. 'To Return' gives the impression of a large, open space and leaves the listener on the edge of their seat as the band drives close to the edge without letting things really kick in hard. This track is all about tension and the band plays it off very well. 'Emotional Drought' is a song breaks into a wall of sound, anchored by the strong basslines of Joe, who displays a vivid style throughout the album as he ties into his brother's kick drum and locks things down. His tones are fantastic and serve to provide the group with their anvil heavy atmosphere.

An album that in retrospect will no doubt be seen as a landmark release in the history of heavy music, Chevelle have managed to create a record that destroys all expectations, moving the group head and shoulders above the alt metal crowd and positioning them as an ensemble likely to have a tremendous impact upon the music world for many years to come.
