Detroit's new school merchants of metal, The Black Dahlia Murder, return with 'Miasma', a somewhat compelling foray into the distinctly metal side of metalcore as the band deliver ten all-new odes to the darker side of human nature.

What's most unfortunate about this record is that it reveals TBDM to be an average ensemble at best and is certainly not the overwhelming claim to the throne that fans had been hoping for.

Still, Black Dahlia sufficiently rages on tracks like the burly leadoff cut 'Built For Sin' and the buzzing behemoth 'Flies.' Trevor Strnad has further refined his vocal approach, his singing becoming more defined on this record than on 'Unhallowed', but unfortunately tracks like 'Statutory Ape' and 'Novelty Crosses' are same sounding and definitely in need of further experimentation.

You'll find enough Swede-style riffing here to conjure up plenty of moshpits, and sufficient blasting to ensure plenty of whiplash on tracks like 'Dave Goes To Hollywood', but for the most part, there is little to distinguish one song from the next.

Swift record sales will ensure that we have not heard the last of The Black Dahlia Murder, hopefully next go-around we'll finally have that groundbreaking effort that fans know the band is capable of.
