Unearth are back with their fourth full-length and doing, well… a lot of the same. Which is a good thing more or less. Unearth found their signature sound ages ago and are sticking to it with a passion. The new album takes very few risks, and basically finds the Massachusetts natives producing a solid, streamlined Unearth album. The March doesn't quite capture the epic quality and instant memorability of their breakthrough 2003 album, “The Oncoming Storm,” but it does provide some memorable moments of its own nonetheless. The album opener, “My Will Be Done,” is probably the strongest track on the album, featuring the trademark uplifting melody and blistering guitar leads that the band has become famous for.
One thing that Unearth has always done well is to produce heavy, angry music that manages to capture a very positive energy at the same time. The March absolutely bursts at the seams with catchy melodic leads that both inspire and motivate. Another Unearth trademark is to spread the best songs out over the course of an album. So many bands frontload everything onto the beginning and basically make the second half of the album not worth listening to. The March is worth listening to all the way through, as the last three songs (“The Chosen,” “Letting Go,” “Truth or Consequence”) are actually some of the best on the album, and carry it out in style.
Overall, the album is definitely worth a purchase for fans of melodic metal. It is hard not to like these guys for their musicianship as well as the sheer emotion they put into their music. Don't miss The March!
