A couple of new band members have given God Dethroned's newest offering 'The Lair Of The White Worm' a creative spark, as this record turns out to be a bit more melodic than the group's previous albums. The intensity of the group remains intact however, as vocalist/guitarist Henri Sattler spits out his angry venom on tracks like 'Sigma Enigma', you get the impression that his dark growls fit even better over the mid-paced material. Oftentimes the band's music takes on a chaotic bent, as in the title track. The stop action riffs in the middle of the song are reminiscent of mid career Sepultura at times. God Dethroned actually remind one at times of what could have been had Sepultura had kept their original dark influences.
'Nihilism' does a great job of setting the tone for the record. Its sinister riff during the introduction suggests absolute chaos. The record features some great lyrics that provide stories as opposed to mish mashes of words that sound cool strung together. On the whole the band creates punishing, brutally heavy riffs that have some cool melodic overtones. The bleak vocals of Sattler give a raw tone to the entire effort. The standout tracks here are 'Nihilism', 'Sigma Enigma' and 'Loyal To The Crown Of God Dethroned', but every song on the record is one hundred percent head-smashing mayhem. 'Lair Of The White Worm' is certainly the best offering from God Dethroned thus far.
