Out with their sixth studio album Blooddrunk people have come to expect nothing less from the Finnish metal band Children of Bodom than fast, well played, Party Thrash. Yes I just made up that genre name "party thrash" but that is how unique a band COB is, they require a genre name be invented. On Blooddrunk COB does not disappoint. The band delivers the goods that people expect from them but in a fresh enough way to not sound stale.

COB has been working for a while to hone its exact sound, to find its special place in the world of metal, and on Blooddrunk you really get a sense that the band has found its niche and is comfortable with it. People have always wondered "are they black metal, melodic death metal, progressive, thrash?" But the bands that truly do well in any scene are the ones that don't sound exactly like everyone else. You should be able to describe it as "sounding like Children of Bodom" rather than as thrash, death, etc and COB has accomplished just that. If a band comes out sounding similar now people will know they borrowed from COB.

There are elements of all kinds of music on Blooddrunk, all of them being variations on metal music of course. Songs like 'Smile Pretty For the Devil' have a definite prog influence with the keyboards driving the rhythm as much as the drums. Alexi Laiho delivers an especially blistering solo on this one, which comprises practically half the song. The title track 'Blooddrunk' has an almost Hardcore feel to it with its extremely chunky riffs but the melodic keyboard rounds out the sound. I love how COB use the keyboards to punctuate a riff but it never takes over the sound. This keeps the sound from being monotonous without making the music too soft. The closer on the album 'Roadkill Morning' is just as fast and angry as the rest of the album, no ballad closer here. There is a slightly slower tempo used throughout Blooddrunk than on COB's previous efforts, but it's not like its slow or anything. COB apparently believes in quality not quantity with Bloodrunk being comprised of only 9 tracks. But there is no point when the album lags so this seems to be a good thing.

Fans of this band don't need to be told to go run out and buy this one, they probably already have, but if you're not a fan yet and you like European thrash and prog metal then you have probably been living in a closet somewhere and you need to go buy the bands entire discography right now!
