7. This Is the War [Video-Clip] [CD-ROM Track]

Clocking in at just this side of fifteen minutes, this six-track offering from Poland's Vader shows the band has moved from the technical death metal ambience the group previously explored on albums like 'Litany' toward a tempestuous assault of updated, hyperspeed thrash. So often throughout the career of Vader, the group has leaned in several different directions in terms of sonority. Regardless of the direction of the music, the intent behind the songs continues to resonate with a chilling perspective of hatred-filled darkness.

A dismal dirge initiates 'Para Bellum' giving way to barbed, Metallica-style riff before finally mutating into a blasting onslaught of manic, wermacht ferocity. Credit the fine folks at Hertz Studios and the infamous Wieslawscy Bros. for the muscular, colossal production on 'The Art Of War', with the spectacular, highly compressed kick drum sound of drummer Varay, being a feature which causes the entire recording stand out as being particularly violent.

You will find Vader are as mighty as ever upon hearing the destructively aggressive 'Banners In The Wind', a track that builds from a darkly mechanical introduction to a torrent of crisp thrashing ferocity. A track that reveals the band's well-seasoned songwriting ability. It is noteworthy that Vader has remained amongst the most elite and influential bands in the scene since the days when the idea of death metal was fairly new. A video clip for 'This Is The War' adds further value to the package, portraying the group's mysterious evil in fine form.

This EP serves as a bridge to the future for Vader and hints at new heights of future domination. Without a doubt, 'The Art Of War' shakes off the uncertainty surrounding the group during the era of 'The Beast' and once again reveals their potential to reign amongst the most illume of extreme metal ensembles. Put simply, this album is a watershed release that ensures this group's forthcoming full-length effort will be met with a serious degree of anticipation.

good review. This is one of the few EP's I have ever bought, and I am very pleased with it. Vader is mighty, even still.
