With Death After Life, the latest disc of medically influenced, blood-soaked gore metal from those morbid M.D.s known as Impaled, the listener will find a recording that fully stands up to Carcass' Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious and then some. Masterfully produced by Trey Spruance (Mr. Bungle), these 12 clinically demented metal manifestations, epitomized by surgically precise guitars and patently pulmonary guttural belches and growls will doubtlessly delight those who find this type of carotid cacophony to be a blast. The skits throughout this concept album, which revolves around the topic of bringing the dead back to life through artificial mechanisms, enhance the recording, making the entire affair seem story-like. It would be incredible if the group shot a video for the entire album, as these intensely creative audio operations would make for decidedly horrific eye-candy. Impaled are at their best on tracks like the grinding Mondo Medicale and raspy anatomy of Preservation Of Death, which features a completely sick tandem guitar solo. Ultimately, this is a definitive platter of guts and gore that ranks amongst the best death metal records of the year. You had best hope that Impaled are not the doctors that are in when it's your turn to go under the blade.
