Some people don’t get Every Time I Die. In all fairness, a metalcore band bursting with southern rock roots and affection for math metal isn’t quite the norm – but hey, who likes normality anyways?!

New Junk Aesthetic introduces a larger infusion of hardcore punk into ETID’s tracks than before, especially on the Refused-inspired track, ‘The Marvelous Slut’. While you’ll find more than enough headbanging and slam-dancing moments, there are still a few hum-along, foot-tapping infectious moments, such as ‘Wanderlust’. The lyrics have also improved– “we are the death of the party, we are the life of the funeral” is the stuff that anthems are made from.

The timings are irregular, riffs are weird, and Keith Buckley is half-mad, half-genius (and Superman if you believe him) – in short, it’s an essential album for every ETID fan. Don’t be fooled by this band’s goofball sense of humour, New Junk Aesthetic may just be one of 2009’s most important releases.
