Soilwork return with a thrashing metal attack that moves toward the vein of newer In Flames style material with tracks like 'Stabbing The Drama', 'Weapon Of Vanity' and 'Stalemate'. The band has injected a larger amount of melody into their compositions, which is welcome. Some fans, however, may balk at the commercial appeal of this album, but those who do not see this as a good metal record nonetheless are missing the point. This is merely an evolution of sound, not a sellout attempt and the band's hard hitting music backs that notion up one hundred percent.
'One With The Flies' certainly will get heads banging with a high octane riff and a pulsating bass line that pushes the song forward toward an angry, aggro chorus. 'The Crest Fallen' features a spastic thrash riff coupled with speed rapping and plenty of hearty growls before lapsing into a jarring, melodic chorus that is instantly memorable. The biggest complaint here is a noticeable lack of guitar solos, which are exactly what this music needs to emphasize the sheer insanity of the rhythm guitars. They do crop up, but not nearly often enough. 'Nerve' is a cryptic affair that resonates with a powerful chorus that carries a massive shot of harmony and stop action metal aggression.
Ultimately, this is another quality work from one of the most intently looked upon acts in metal today. Soilwork fuse melody and power on songs like 'Blind Eye Halo' with a crisp yet slamming sound that gets pits moving and fans screaming along. Here's looking forward to some devastating live performances of this material in 2005.
