Finally, some good news. Overcast have released “Reborn to Kill Again,” and the re-recorded versions of all their old favorites are heavier and more crushing than ever. I like to think that I have a fairly broad taste in music, but the truth is that the stuff that has always really gotten me going is that which leans towards the extreme side of the spectrum. Overcast's unholy marriage of hardcore punk and thrash metal certainly fits that bill. Nothing has changed. The band has not lost one iota of their pure anger or aggression. From chuggy breakdowns that are heavier than lead to immediate breakneck thrash riffs, the album is relentless. Its desperate tone and suffocating fury are exactly what the doctor ordered if you're anything like me. If you've ever had a negative emotion in your life, it will be channeled.
I am a HUGE fan of Shadows Fall as well, and Brian Fair's unique raspy growl is on display here in epic form throughout. For fans of Shadows Fall and Killswitch Engage that are thinking about picking up the album, however, BEWARE. You will not find much of the melodic sensibility found in the music of those two. Overcast was a band on a mission, delivering the most intense music possible, without much of a care for sales or financial gain. Not to say that you definitely won't like them – just be ready for something different.
I have to say that a song I enjoyed a bit less than the others was one of the new songs, “Reborn to Kill Again,” with its more generic rock sensibility. It displays a different side of the musical tastes of the members of the band, that is very understandable given their many years away from the band, but comes off rather flat in my opinion. It sounds rather like a lot of other stuff out there. The other new song, “Root Bound Apollo” is the exact opposite, however, and stands toe to toe with all of their older material in terms of its sheer brutality. If you like extreme music, whether you fancy yourself a hardcore kid or a metalhead or whatever, go out and get this album!
