Could this be the Slayer album to redeem the band from it's past two awry releases? Well that is still up to the bitter Slayer fan to decide but 'Christ Illusion' definitely proves to be the better Slayer album to come out since Divine Intervention.
You can certainly tell that Dave Lombardo has had an influence on this album and the man still knows how to make a blast beat interesting after all these years. The re acquiring of Lombardo was essential to this release as you will hear clearly. The songs strike memories of 'Divine Intervention' and 'Seasons In The Abyss' as they can be heard as combinations of both albums. The band does their usual heavy to fast heavy routine on this disc but as mentioned, the songs seem that they are fueled by the days of Lombardo.
'Flesh Storm', 'Jihad', and 'Skeleton Christ' all take on that excellent riff rendering that makes up most of the verse and then they will bust into the thrash areas so that Kerry King can rip out another solo from 83' and then Hanneman will come back with one of his more textured and well played solos. So all the elements of Slayer are there, and for once in a long time they are put together well but I'm sure it still won't be good enough for most fans. Not much of a change up on theme of course, war and hatred of religion is still the primary topic for this disc, so everything is in its right place for the band.
The song writing has overall improved from 'God Hates Us All', there's no seven string bullshit going on, thankfully that was short lived and the integrity of the band seems healthier than ever. The speculations for this one have been said, it's pretty much up to you, the Slayer fan, to decide on this one. 'Christ Illusion' proves that Slayer are still reigning and no matter how picky you are about this band satisfying your needs, they will continue to be one of the best known metal acts out there.
