After circulating the underground of the Florida Death metal scene since the early nineties, Pain Principle signed to Blind Prophecy Records and released its official debut album 'Waiting for the Flies' this fall. Founded by vocalist Kevin "Bull" Bullock and guitarist John Sutton, Pain Principle has gone through a slew of other members including Brian Benson who was also a touring bassist for the band Death at the time. Benson distributed Pain Principal demos at Death shows which helped get the bands music circulating around the death metal scene. Now, after years of perfecting its craft, Pain Principle has the album 'Waiting for the Flies' under its belt, which is a powerhouse of metal and hardcore music. The album was produced by Erik Rutan, who is famous for doing albums with Hate Eternal and Cannibal Corpse.
The album starts with the track 'The Death of Johnny Beans' which is a slow, melodic guitar intro that lulls the listener into a false sense of security. Then the song 'Body Farm' kicks in to let you know what's really going on. Fast, scale laden guitar work is the opener for this one, which leads into the shouted Phil Anselmo like vocals, and heavy bass and guitar. Pain Principle does a great job of layering progressive-style guitar work over hard core rhythm sections, with the two parts fitting together with perfect musical timing. Most songs on 'Waiting for the Flies' are not complete without a full on, dime bag inspired, finger working guitar solo. The band says it is heavily influenced by Pantera and Death, which is definitely evident but some modern influences like Killswitch Engage are also noticeable. Interestingly enough, the album ends with the title track 'Waiting for the Flies' which does not disappoint as a fast and heavy anthem of rebellion but also has some more melodic moments for singer Kevin Bullock. Pain Principle is obviously a well oiled machine that plays furiously and writes pretty catchy metal songs. As far as being yet another hardcore-metal band, Pain Principle does stand out from the pack because of its skill at song structure and playing music in general.
