Remember when you saw Lord of the Rings movies for the first time? If you haven't than you suck and should be hung...but um for this exercise lets use 'Ben Hur' or maybe 'Clash of the Titans'? 'Beast Master??' If you haven't seen these... well I can't fucking help you! Remember how when you were done watching these movies you felt like you wanted to go out and have your own epic adventure? How it felt to have something evoke such a powerful response from you? THAT'S AMON AMARTH! Every album is like an epic adventure in your ears!

If you are not a fan of Amon Amarth NOW would be a good time to start. This has to be one of the most EPIC melodic death metal bands on the planet and you need to catch the fuck up. They bring EVERYTHING to the table for a full course metal meal in this Surtur Rising, their 10th album.

Surtur is a fire-sword wielding giant that has an epic battle with the Gods of the Norse Pantheon and a World ending battle with the (most important) God Freyr. The story is truly fucking epic. Proud to say that most of my metal brethren are readers and story nerds... so I implore you to read up on this story, Prose Edda.

The first track, 'War of the Gods', had me frowning, because it started off a bit slow... for like the first 10 seconds... then they fucking get heavy and I about came in my yoga pants! That pretty much is how they kept it throughout the entire album. Every song is fucking heavy, riff-tastic and brutal as fuck! My favorite song, 'The Last Stand of Frej', is a bit different than the norm for Amon Amarth with it being very Doom/Death metal. The doom feeling is so fucking true, because once Frej is killed... the world ends!

I really loved Twilight of the Thunder God which preceded this album... but this somehow seems heavier and more epic. Amon Amarth never lets their fans down. They continue to do exactly as they have done and we praise the Gods for it! Do yourself a metal favor and get this album. Then go see them when they tour the US this coming Month! Quick note: the US tour is JUST THEM... no opening act. A NIGHT ALONE WITH AA... FUCK YEAH!
