Many in the hardcore world are probably not strangers to Damnation AD. The band has a few releases under their belt already and continues their direct hardcore approach with their latest effort "In This Life or the Next".
Damnation AD gives off that hardcore vibe but more in the ways of Hatebreed (early Hatebreed), All Out War, and Earth Crisis. Bottom heavy at times, Damnation AD's sound has not evolved greatly but production-wise everything sounds a bit more crisp and it's at this point that the band's sound is now defined. The production factor really has no bearing on the music so let us get to that part.
Like the previous releases you get that mid tempo straight up heavy hardcore sound, not so much the old school speeding chord progression riffage that most associate HC with. With that in mind the band has to do more in the way of song as they have steadier areas in their music that allows for a much steadier paced listening. This album is indeed heavy, though in ways of song sometimes Damnation AD does not grasp their entire song writing potential, therefore the heavy aspect of the band only goes so far. What I appreciate about this album is that the band knows that a tactful well placed breakdown is something that works diligently for a song, not for the sake of it. Damnation AD do not go over board with any breakdowns and keep their tunes in good taste, privy to that hardcore vibe.
I don't know if I could really sit and go through an entire album of Damnation AD's but they do offer more than most HC bands these days, maybe it's because they also appreciate their metal influences and integrate them accordingly in their songs or maybe it's because they've been involved with this type of music long enough to know what works well for them. In the end Damnation AD offer a very simple, to the point, HC album that deserves attention.
